My Brigantine, by James Fenimore Cooper (1789 - 1851)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/my-brigantine-by-james-fenimore-cooper/
LibriVox volunteers bring you 15 recordings of My Brigantine by James Fenimore Cooper.
This was the Weekly Poetry project for December 26, 2021.
-----
After a stint on a commercial voyage, James Fenimore Cooper served in the U.S. Navy as a midshipman, where he learned the technology of managing sailing vessels which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. Cooper, beloved though he is as a novelist, hasn't drawn much attention for his poetry. Here is one of his pieces expressing his appreciation for a beautiful ship, taken from his 1830 novel "The Water-Witch". (Summary by TriciaG)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
My Brigantine by James Fenimore Cooper, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
JUST in thy mould and beauteous in thy form,
Gentle in roll and buoyant on the surge,
Light as the sea-fowl rocking in the storm,
In breeze and gale thy onward course we urge,
My water-queen!
Lady of mine,
More light and swift than thou none thread the sea
With surer keel or steadier on its path,
We brave each waste of ocean-mystery
And laugh to hear the howling tempest’s wrath,
For we are thine.
My brigantine!
Trust to the mystic power that points thy way,
Trust to the eye that pierces from afar;
Trust the red meteors that around thee play,
And, fearless, trust the Sea-Green Lady’s star,
Thou bark divine!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

In truth, I don't know the 'correct' pronunciation of 'brigantine,' but I have made it rhyme with the other lines. (BRIG-unh-tine)

Yeah, if it were in isolation, I would pronounce it "brig-in-TEEN". Shows what I know!

Thanks! PL to come in a bit. I've got work to do in the old week's poem first. :)

Cz

Pronunciation probably works best with a Scottish accent, where tine is less a long "i"... is my guess. I didn't do it that way either
I asked my librarian about the noise, and she said, "no one would come here
if they weren't allowed to talk out loud." So I read out loud.

Good morning. I know you marked this PL okay, Tricia, but it kept me up last night! I've loaded a very slightly adapted version (last line so difficult!), which is the same otherwise, but clocks at 1:17

Thanks
Cz

Good, but please cut the opening silence down to 0.5-1 second. :)

The end silence is a little longer than the 5 seconds required, but I'm not going to quibble about that.

Tricia -

Here's my try -

Track length: 1:12

I'm with you. I would have pronounced it "brig-in-TEEN" except for the rhyme.
