[GROUP]Porto Rico: The Land of the Rich Port, by Joseph Bartlett Seabury (1846 - 1923)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/porto-rico-by-joseph-b-seabury/

Puerto Rico was acquired by the United States in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. This volume was written in 1903 as Book XII in the series “The World and Its Peoples.” The series was intended for young people, but this work would be fun listening for those of any age interested in what Puerto Rico was like in the early 20th century. Intended to familiarize people in the U.S. with their new territory, topics include the island’s people, geography, climate, flora, fauna, and schools. There is also some coverage of Puerto Rican history and the new government established under U.S. rule. (Summary by Verla Viera)

Because not everyone has access to Google Books (I think), this might be a better source: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/008585261.

Dear MC,

This is my third solo setup, but still getting the hang of it. Please delete that second (screwed up) post. The one at the top is correct. It is not letting me delete the second one, maybe because I already deleted another one that had a separate set of screwups. Honestly, if you MC this, I will not be a big screwup throughout the process :D

Nice start! And of course you included just what was necessary, skipping the part at the end about a map and table of pronunciation which presumably won't be included.
Looking forward to the rest. PL ok!

Just for my own reference, Chapter 1 will start on p.29

Nicely done - PL ok!

Section 2 up, my first recording of 2022 :-)

I was really interested to read about the custom of alms. When I was there, I had an older co-worker and friend. I'm guessing she was born around 1930. Whenever we would be walking around, she would always give something to any homeless person or beggar we saw. It was usually only a dime or quarter, but she did it so naturally and matter of factly. Her upbringing would not have been so far away in time from the description here--her parents generation were likely part of this custom.

And my first trip of 2022 is to Puerto Rico :D

Not sure if it's a coincidence, but the three points I have to make all occured within the first minute. The rest of the section is all PL ok. So:
  • 00:28 - you say "willow-trees", should be "willow-trays", though I had a little chuckle at the thought of them carrying willow trees on their head.
  • 00:36 - you say "scarlet melons", the text says "brown melons" - I'm not sure if that was a choice of yours or if you're using a different text?
  • 00:43 - similar to above, you say "nearly a yard in length", the text says "nearly a foot in length".
Just for my own reference, this section ended on p.51.
