Yea for Joyce! One of the most frustrating and most rewarding writers of all time. I did this in college and still didn't get a lot of it. This should be fun. I volunteer for Ch. 8.

We'll hear --something-- on the 7th... I suppose it depends on how much is imbibed. And, of course, the mood of the dog that day; everything's dependent on that beast, really.

Ah, what fun! Word by word by word we read section four--seven of us--in a crowded Irish pub in downtown Tokyo with truly bad BGM (listen for "Funkytown" and "Walk Like an Egyptian") and very good Guinness.

I was excited to get so many people together--half were friends, the others all new to me. They are all great people. So here's a little bit of info about them (in order of reading):

David wrote his thesis on Ulysses! He even brought a real book copy of it. He's one of four Americans in our group.

Kaseumin is a LibriVox member and master meower. She was the quietest person in the group and our only Japanese reader.

Susan, also a LibriVox member, arrived fresh off the train from a holiday trip to Yamanashi. She is from Texas, but sounds like she's from Pennsylvania.

Robin is in Tokyo on a business trip from Singapore. I've known him for 8 years but had never heard him read before.

Tod is my husband. I hear him read all the time. He's pretty good, but I didn't like how he looked at me when he said "ample flesh."

I read and made a lot of mistakes. I should have had some food with my pints. Mrs. Bloom ended up with jangles on her pillow somehow...

Jeremy, our token Aussie, was reluctant but read beautifully. I especially liked the PS in the letter from Millie.

Syd claimed he couldn't read, so you won't hear his voice, but he took photos which I will get soon.

It was great! Expect us to take another section in the new year.

hey kristen, the joyceans are about ti arrive at my place -- no pub for this version -- irish stew on the stove, guinness in the fridge & jameson on the counter. will get some pics too, i hope.

so I spent all day yesterday recovering from my Dec 7 Ulysses reading. I'll have some pics up soon, and some audio too - unedited. we ate Irish stew, drank lots of guinness, had a fiddler, drank lots of jameson, and chapter 1 went fairly well. after we finished chapter 1, and the jameson, we drank a bottle of scotch, and decided to read chapter 7 as well. that one went, ahem, less well, as we removed all restrictions for bad behaviour, and things quickly descended into chaos, all committed to the memory of mp3, which will go directly into the secret LibriVox vault, not released for public consumption: 96 minutes of mostly unintelligible shouts and whispers, free jazz improv fiddling and various other noises ... but good fun nonetheless.

a writer friend, who participated, said in the morn: "that was one of the most bizarre evenings of my life." which I think was a compliment. and I think I'll sign up my crew for another chapter.
