The Beast-Jewel of Mars by Leigh Douglass Brackett (1915 - 1978).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-beast-jewel-of-mars-by-leigh-douglass-brackett/
Following the suspicious death of his girlfriend, Captain Burk Winters sets off down the dangerous path of a Martian vice called 'Shanga'-- the Going Back. What starts out as an effort to rescue Jill Leland will pit the former starship captain against the dark underbelly of the canal cities, conspiracies of greed and, above all, the vengeance of a planet that will not bow to economic conquest without a fight. ( EVKesserich)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/63872
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Sounds great. Do you plan to fill in the MW now, or as you go? (I prefer to do it up-front, but I'm realizing that many soloists don't share my preference. ) If it is all as you want it, then I can go ahead and move us to Going Solo now. :)

Sorry, I totally forgot that step. Combining Chapters One and Two, since the first is really more of a prologue and too short to stand by itself. Now everything is set up, so please go ahead and move it at you convenience.

Btw, I absolutely love the name 'Devorah'. So pretty. :)

One of the reasons I like this piece is because I think Burke has a little more depth to him than some of your more standard one-off pulp protagonists. :-)

Another PL OK.

Yep, a bit cold up here in New England.
Spent a few years in southern Ohio, Portsmouth to be exact.
Might take a drive over to Portsmouth, NH, tomorrow.
Or a few miles the other direction is New Boston, NH.

Ah, that is a good reference point-- I'm almost smack-dab between Portsmouth and Cincinnati. And, if you've spent any time here, I'm sure you enjoyed our four lovely seasons: Winter, Raining, Still Raining, and Construction.

I'm working on chapter four and, for what ever reason, it seems my memory deceived me on the length. It will probably be under (or just over) 20:00. Would you advise rolling that into chapter five (ie, three recorded sections), or going back and splitting things up properly by chapters? I've only done one solo project previously, and I was advised then that individual sections shouldn't be too short. Not sure what (if anything) needs to be done here.

Thanks for your patience!
