What Shall We Do? by Leo Tolstoy (1828 - 1910).

A vivid description of wealth and poverty in Russia in Tolstoy's day, an inquiry into the root causes of economic inequality, and a vision of a more just way of living.

Tolstoy recounts his own disturbing encounters with extreme poverty in Moscow, his initial idea of making the problem disappear by generous financial contributions, and his subsequent realization that the problem of poverty was much more intractable than he had imagined. He concludes that poverty is fundamentally linked with the luxurious lifestyle to which he and his class were accustomed, and that both are detrimental both to the rich and to the poor. He goes on to investigate the roots of power imbalances, both in the state and in markets, and to make suggestions for a fundamental social and economic reform in the interest of justice and well-being. Both his social critique and his proposed reforms are grounded in a deeply held and somewhat unorthodox religious faith, as well as in a vigorously applied but somewhat unconventional view of science.

Unfortunately he also expresses some views on the role and duties of women and the use of birth control which some readers may find offensive. This material is mostly contained in Chapter 40, the last chapter. (summary by Joanna Michal Hoyt)

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.
Note that passwords for the magic window and the forum are not connected. You can use the same password in both places (I think a lot of people do), but if you change it on one system, it won't affect the password on the other system.

Next, you'll need to start entering section (or chapter) titles. I've entered the first couple to get you started.

Then you are ready to start recording. When you upload a section, it's your responsibility to add the link and duration (mm:ss) to the Magic Window. Link from the uploader goes in the "listen URL" column, duration goes in the "notes" column. Then be sure to post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL so your DPL knows there is something new.

There's a bit of a learning curve on your first solo, so if you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together.

Thank you very much for coordinating and for taking time to guide me through this process!

I already have one questions whose answer perhaps ought to be obvious.

The Gutenberg text I plan to read from is clearly marked as public domain, but (according to the introductory note) it was deliberately never copyrighted, and I am not seeing either a clear date for this translation or a clear translator attribution. Vladimir Tchertkoff has signed the introductory Free Age Press manifesto, and there he calls himself its editor; I see that he is also described as a translator of Tolstoy's work, and at the end of the file there is what seems to be a page advertising another Free Age Press work of Tolstoy's which Tchertkoff has translated. So I put him down as translator when I applied for this book. I'm not sure if I should credit him as such as I read or if the attribution is not certain enough and if I should say "Free Age Press English edition" or something else... Sorry. (I am not even sure if this is the right place to be asking this question.)

Well, we do the best we can given the info available on the PG file ... and sometimes that's not much.

The PG page for this work doesn't list a translator (see https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/38690), although I think there's reason enough to think Vlad was the translator, if you want to list him as such.

We don't usually identify the editors.

And even if a translator was identified, you'd only say that name twice, in the intro to the first section and the outro at the end of the book.

So, I'll leave it to you. We can leave Vlad as the translator and you include his name in the first intro and last outro, or we take him off and you just list Tolstoy as the author with no translator, because none is listed on the metadata at PG.

I've asked for standard PL, but just wanted to add that I'd be glad of constructive criticism if the PL is up for offering any. I know I need to work on evening out my volume--both on not fading out over the course of a sentence and on not raising my voice when I am recording the second or third repeat of a tricky sentence.

I'm not reading the translator attribution since I am not quite certain of it--Mary Ann Spiegel said it was acceptable to skip it. But I didn't check with her until I had already filled out my template.
