Round the Moon by Jules Verne (1828 - 1905). Translated by Louis Mercier (1820 - 1875)

https://librivox.org/round-the-moon-version-2-by-jules-verne/

Jules Verne’s sequel to his “From the Earth to the Moon” begins with a short chapter to catch you up, if you missed the first book.

Then we join our three adventurers in their huge projectile as they gather themselves after the shock of being fired at the Moon from the Columbiad cannon. Perhaps in a nod to Yankee exceptionalism, Verne permits them an extraordinary encounter in space, and better yet – to survive it!

But that encounter has a lasting effect: despite all the careful preparations to deposit the projectile on the Moon, it appears the travelers are destined to miss it! (The book is not called “On the Moon”, is it?!)

Careful scientists at heart, the former artillerymen in the projectile note every occurrence faithfully in their notebooks, along with the details of their observations of the Moon as they fly past… and round it. That precision might pay off as they try to figure out what happens to them next: will they fly off into space, become an eternal satellite of the Moon, or perhaps, something else?

And do they have any way at all to affect that?
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/44278
NOTE: This is an omnibus including "From the Earth to the Moon", of which this is the sequel. Text for this book starts about halfway through.
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Well, I have begun recording, and an eventual proof-listener can catch up later!

Chapter 00, wherein we reprise the major events of the preceding book:
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/roundthemoon_00_verne_128kb.mp3

And then we move on to the actual moment of detonation!!
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/roundthemoon_01_verne_128kb.mp3

I finally was inspired to check out the locale that Verne references, on Google Earth. Oh, that Verne was a clever man! Rather than have "Yankees" buying up "Stones Hill" and charging admission to see the ACTUAL SPOT where Verne (fictionally) placed his Columbiad, his given coordinates are for a spot about 26 miles north of Hope Town, Bahamas... in the Atlantic Ocean!

Well , that way, he could write another one with an underwater craft searching for it. :D :D Let's stay here for a day or so and see who drops in .

Hi Anne & Mark,
If you don't have a DPL, I would like to stake my claim. :D

I read this pretty uncritically as a kid of 10 or 11; now certain parts jump out: the expectation that hydrogen, which has no scent, would be smelled if the reservoir leaked; the idea that during the launch loose items would have hit the ceiling! (We'll leave aside the fact that the projectile developed over 1,000 g's during launch, and modern astronauts train at about 7-10 g's. If we try to be too scientific about the story, there would be no story!)

Oh well, that was the state of science fiction in the 1860's.

So, today we have our travelers recover their wits and take stock... and have a close call!

Well, in Chapter 3, they take account of everything they brought with them... but Verne has completely forgotten bathroom facilities! And with extra dogs, it's gonna get close in there, no matter how much oxygen they produce!

Chapter 4 presages Lockheed's goof of a few years back - in space science, you need to check your work!

Chapter 5 gives us another improbable scene... but Verne had never heard of "explosive decompression."

Considering the times and knowledge, the creativity is amazing. I find that there are times when we must just accept and enjoy.
It would have easier if they brought cats, easy litter box clean up. :D
