Hester: A Story of Contemporary Life, Volume 1 by Margaret O. Oliphant (1828 - 1897).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/hester-volume1-by-margaret-o-oliphant/
Catherine Vernon has a firm hand on her family and on the family business. Her plans for her young protege Edward, whom she loves like a son, are disturbed by the arrival of Hester, a 14-year-old girl who is just as strong willed. The conflict between Catherine and Hester is resolved through their mutual love for Edward. On one level a love story, Hester is unusual for its time in its portrayal of women in business. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

MW coming up.

edit: I added volume 1 to the title in the first intro and the book ending statement. Hopefully, all three volume will eventually be recorded. In the shorter intros for the second and subsequent sections the title could be just "Hester." I also shortened the filename and added the volume number. Really long filenames create problems. Should we advertise for a DPL?

I wasn't sure if I should include the epigraph (the part of a poem by Lamb) that comes before the beginning of chapter 1. Just tell me if I should delete it or adapt the intro.

Each of the three volumes will be approximately 8-9 hours long by my estimate. I'd recommend doing each book separately. All at once is a huge time commitment. If done separately you can slip in other books between the volumes if you wished. It's very easy for me to delete unused sections so don't let that bother you.

It's quite short so you could just read it before reading Chapter 1, both in section 1 (intro-poem-chapter 1 text-outro). The intro and outro statements for section 1 could be left as is. Whether you read content other than the main text is entirely your decision so you could decide not to read the poem. If you decide to read just one chapter per section (16 total), I will delete the unused sections.

The filenames will need to be corrected (see below) and reuploaded but that can be done after the DPL listens to the files. I'll advertise for a DPL. Also don't forget to fill in the MW. The titles will be needed by the DPL.
hestervol1_##_oliphant_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. hestervol1_01_oliphant_128kb.mp3)
When you reupload the files copy the URL and paste it into the MW. The duration (mm:ss) can be added to the Notes field.

2-3 PL OK!

I'm hooked and would like to DPL this book if it's ok with you.

edit: I added the titles though without the chapter number. The section and chapter numbers are identical so the correct number will precede the title. If you still want the chapter number then "Chapter X" will have to precede the title (e.g. Chapter 1 Vernon's). Leading numbers in the title field can cause problems.

Hi, DC:

Happy for you to proof-listen--glad you're enjoying the book so far.

I'll correct the file names as you showed and put the times in the notes field, but I don't know how to update the MW--I didn't think readers had that access.

Readers don't but on a solo recording you are also the BC (book coordinator) and they do. Click on the BC Admin button just below the MW. If it says you don't have authorization follow the instructions below. You may need to reset your password (new BC/Reader password versus old Reader/Forum password).

The three options at that link are upload files, fill in the new project info page, and login for BCs and MCs. When I try the last one it says I don't have permission. Maybe access has been tightened recently.
