The Story of the First Trans-Continental Railroad by William Francis Bailey (1861 - 0).

Story of the planning, construction, and early operating of the Trans-continental railroad. There is coverage of the early proposals that began as early as the late 1700's to follow the best route to the Pacific Ocean. 1819 saw proposals for steam propelled carriages to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In the early 1800's interest gained for creating a railroad connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Costs, construction, and operation are covered along with details on the Kansas Pacific Railway, the Denver Pacific Railroad, and the Central Pacific Railroad. ( Paul Harvey)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/22598
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Off we go! Choo-choo - well, not yet.
1-4 are PL OK

I grew up right on the Oregon trail, so Lewis & Clark and the rest were part of childhood lore. We were also a major railroad town for the region, and Union Pacific was a big deal. Did get a train ride once.

Hi Larry,

I am finding this information on this book to be really interesting, but I think that this book could have also fit in the "insomnia" readers collection as well, especially on the finance chapter.

It is fun to hear about the history, even though much of the history is probably not completely accurate. But it adds a unique perspective to reading the thoughts and ideas from over 100 years ago and how things were viewed at that time.

Hi Larry,

I uploaded section 5 for PL.

This chapter has more fun with the raucous caused in the towns.

Hi Larry,

I uploaded section 6. This is a chapter I would have liked to leave out of the recording. :(

Thanks
