The Untempered Wind by Joanna E. Wood (1867 - 1927).

Upon publication of “The Untempered Wind” in 1894, Joanna Wood quickly rose to international prominence, becoming in the next few years the most highly paid fiction-writer in Canada. In this novel, we find a detailed picture of village life. The narrative weaves through a variety of character types: the refined and the coarse, the humble and the self-righteous, the virtuous and the vicious. All these types are measured according to their treatment of Myron Holder, a young unwed mother — a “fallen woman” in the eyes of this “spiteful, narrow-minded village.”

An early reviewer extolled Wood as Canada’s Charlotte Brontë, because of her sympathetic treatment of a disadvantaged woman trying to forge an independent life. An even more apt comparison might be to Thomas Hardy: like Hardy's characters, Myron is buffeted by cruel, relentless Fate — the “untempered wind” of the title.

In “Silenced Sextet” (a 1993 study of once-popular Canadian women writers who subsequently dropped out of the public eye), Joanna Wood is seen as an important figure in the development of realism in Canadian literature: “No nineteenth-century writer better presents the sound, smell, and feel of day-to-day village life in this country.” (Summary by Bruce Pirie)

Ummm... actually Amy, I couldn't get into the Magic Window, and when I checked to see that the project is actually attached to my name, I found that in the list of "my" projects, this isn't listed. Oddly, using the LibriVox catalogue search, if I search for the author, I do find the book, listed as "in progress". If I search for the title, nothing shows up. If I search for reader (i.e., me), this book doesn't show up.

Maybe... something isn't fully plugged in yet?

EDITED: Oh! I see the problem. You haven't actually put my name beside the sections in the Magic Window. I suppose that explains why I can't get in.

No, I'm not. I see that a catalogue search now recognizes me as a soloist doing this book, However, when I click on "BC Admin" (underneath the MW), I get the login window but then it rejects me, with the message "Incorrect Login." ...As if it recognizes me as a reader, but not as the BC.

Try logging out of everything. Then with your BC Workflow password (not the forum one) try logging into the MW. That may work. Good luck

Susanne, each chapter begins with a little quotation/ epigraph — a few lines of quoted poetry. It's obvious, of course, to anyone who's looking at the printed page, but I hope my reading can make clear to a listener that this is a bit of poetry. Otherwise, it could seem confusing to the listener, who might wonder at something that apparently comes out of nowhere and disrupts the storyline. Let me know if you think this is ever a problem. (I guess all I can try to do is read those bits with more rhythm — more "poetry-like".)

Hello Bruce, great that you started reading The Untempered Wind as we come to an end of a dramatic year The first chapter offers a glimpse into what's to come and I look forward to it.

The way you read the quotation and the slight pause after it should make it possible for the listener to experience it as poetry.

Chapter 4 is ready for PL.

It's interesting to watch this author shifting between her different goals — the different things she wants to do.
In this chapter:
(a) she wants to sketch the kind of person who lives in the village, so she spends a lot of time on Mrs. Deans' life and her household;
(b) she wants to give us tidbits about village life in general, so she spends time on the itinerant rag collector;
(c) she wants to continue deepening our understanding of Myron, so she returns at the end of the chapter to thoughts about how Myron is handling things.

The shifts between these interests are pretty obvious — maybe a bit abrupt — in this, which is, after all, her first novel. I suppose a more polished artist might interweave the strands more gracefully.
