Hi Colleen, Thanks for this account of the ingenious methods of marine salvage pioneered by Captain William Coppin (1805-1895)! :D From his Wikipedia bio, he sounds like an inventive and ambitious shipbuilder/entrepreneur! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Coppin

Yes, when the article author hinted that Coppin should one day write a book about his ventures, I got my hopes up and went looking for one at Internet Archive and PG, alas, nothing under his name at either site!

Hi Ebeltran, Welcome to LibriVox and to the Short Nonfiction collection! :) Your recording has the correct specifications and passed the LibriVox "Checker" app test.

Your recording is PL OK! The most startling thing, to me, about Darrow's analysis of homicide was his blunt assertion "If men lived by reason the race would not survive."

One thing for future submissions, please be sure to give us the URL for your source in your post. The way to list a Gutenberg source is given in #4 in the instructions at top of the page. For Darrow, this is the URL: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/12027/12027-h/12027-h.htm

Thanks for your contribution to volume 079! :)

Hi Colleen, Thanks for this most interesting account of the salvage of the Alphita! :D Were you thinking of the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster when you read this? I was. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costa_Concordia_disaster

I'm your PL'er for this recording. All is fine, except for one minor issue of pronunciation at 1:42 (Court of Admiralty). The pronunciation of the word "admiralty" should derive from the word "admiral." To me, it sounded like you said "ad-mir-ality." https://www.google.com/search?q=admiralty&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS871US871&oq=admiralty&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l3.2585j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
I think you might like to fix this.

You are right and I've been pronouncing that word wrong in my head all my life! I will get on fixing that!

Hi Ebeltran, Thanks for your second contribution to vol. 079! :D Don't worry about having forgotten to list the URL last time! When you're starting out with LibriVox, there's a lot to remember! You're doing fine! One other small thing to remember is this, that in the file names, we only use the author's last name, (i.e darrow, not clarencedarrow). You'll find the format for file names in #2 in the instructions at the top of the page. Please just remember this for next time; there's no need to correct the files you've already uploaded. We'll fix things on this end, so we don't have extra files taking up room on the server.

Thanks for the essay on the uselessness of reason Ebeltran

A few errors noted:

8:17 Those who believe that there is any power to stop all the harmful manifestations of man's instincts, - you said man instincts – sounded off while listening many s’s around 10:40

19:30 Dogma and creed deaden and cannot appeal to the reason of man. you said deeden

20:20 mixed with influences not conducive to a normal life forgot to say not

20:42 as a large part of our population has come from lands where beauty and art and music have for generations been made a part of the common life of all. forgot to say been
