I have an office/craft room with a desk and a lot of shelves. It’s my writing space and paper crafting space as well as my recording space. It’s not too bad though it could probably use some more sound absorbency. I hung an old quilt over the bookcase behind me and an old blanket over the door to absorb some sound. Now that our elderly dog has passed on, I may get a carpet in the room as well. (Joey had a lifelong jihad against all floor coverings and anything fabric like on the floor, even towels or piles of laundry...) My biggest issue is more the outside sounds that get in through the old windows...planes, trains and automobiles! I’m thinking of getting some blackout type curtains for over the windows during recording, right now it’s just blinds. I know that wouldn’t cut all the outer noise but would probably help, and also add more absorbency in the room.

My studio is very makeshift. My house is a Victorian back to back terrace and the topmost rooms are in what might be considered the attic. One room is quite large and serves as my daughter's bedroom; the other is only (approx) six by six feet with a ceiling that slants from ten foot to two. I have used a variety of sound dampening materials to the walls and ceiling. My PC is housed in my daughter's bedroom with cables fed to the studio through a conduit. I have a small PC desk on which sits my monitor, there is a pull out tray on which sits my keyboard. My microphone set up is probably the most amusing; I have a Snowball microphone which is suspended from the ceiling with curtain wire, and hangs to a prime position, slightly to the right and just above head height, when I am seated in my chair. My monitor is spositioned to the left, so that when I read/record I do not speak directly into the microphone. The door to the room is also padded. I refer to the room as 'the broom cupboard ' but my wife calls it my 'padded cell'.

Since day one I have used our master bedroom walk-in closet; after taking a mic around every reasonable spot in the house and comparing test recordings, I found the best sound there. It is relatively isolated and being jammed full of clothes makes the acoustics okay, but not perfect. I constructed 3 2'x4'x4"sound absorbing panels for good measure and I think the space got to about 90% dry. However, I recently removed the clothes from my 'half' of the closet to make a little more room and convenience of recording. I had to compensate for the removed clothes with more acoustic panels and it is okay but frankly no better acoustically than before. Still needs more/different treatment to get that last 10%, but I cant really fit it and don't want to buy professional stuff, ugh! Otherwise I really like the space now as I can fit my small sit/stand table, mic stand with mic and second stand with iPad I read from as well as a cushy accent chair I put on sliders to easily move around on the carpet. Also I can get both speakers in there now and a house plant

The equipment has changed many times but my preference is a laptop (used an ancient netbook for years but now my Macbook) with a large diaphragm condenser plugged into an interface.
