The Box-Car Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner (1890 - 1979).
Henry, Jess, Violet, and Benny just lost their father and are all alone. To avoid being sent to the grandfather they fear, they have no choice but to run away. This leads to a weary midnight journey, a wild storm, and the fun of settling into an old, abandoned boxcar in the woods. When Henry's job makes them new friends, they don't realize how important that will be for the future of their little family. ( HannahMary)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm not trying to compete with the version two solo that is underway. But when I have searched the catalog for "The Boxcar Children" a couple years ago and again recently, I did not find any matches. So today when I was in the middle of setting up this project (after recording a few chapters as a test run), what should I find but the author already in your system... and the book title spelled differently than in my searches. Oops!

I'll go ahead and start version three anyway since I wanted to do it for more practice of children's narration. And I always enjoy having several versions to choose from in the catalog - maybe even to listen to more than one over time!

Hope I'm not jumping to too early, but if you don't have a DPL in mind yet, I'd be happy to to it :)

Thanks so much! I was wondering about the filename but forgot to ask. MW is filled in, and I'll upload the chapters I finished today.

Okay, Jenn, chapters 2-5 are ready for you! I also recorded and edited chapter 1, but it sounds like I hadn't hit my stride yet. So I would like to hopefully redo that in my next recording session.

I'm trying to improve my children's book narration, so if you have any CC for me regarding style, characterizations, tone, pace... let me know.

Chapter 2 is PL-OK!

I should be able to listen to the other chapters this evening.

I thought your pacing was fine and you have a lovely voice! It was easy to tell who was talking without the voices being overdone. I especially love the voice you gave to Benny. Looking forward to listening to more!

Thanks for the feedback. I was most concerned that I might overdo Benny's voice, so that's a relief! If you hear me getting too inconsistent with the voices over time (since I can only find a recording session every week or two (or three!), please let me know. And any other CC you may have will be appreciated.

Hmm...can you check the file the Chapter 3? I'm getting some odd skipping from it. I played it directly from the MW as well as downloaded it and got the same sort of thing.
