The Shorter Works of Tertullian Volume 1 by Tertullian (155 - 240).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-shorter-works-volume-1-by-tertullian/
"In the latter part of the second and in the former part of the third century there flourished at Carthage the famous Tertullian, the first Latin writer of the church whose works are come down to us. All his writings betray a sour, monastic, harsh, and severe turn of mind. "Touch not, taste not, handle not," might seem to have been the maxims of his religious conduct. The abilities of Tertullian, as an orator and a scholar, are far from being contemptible, and have doubtless given him a reputation to which his theological knowledge by no means entitles him. Yet the man seems always in good earnest, and therefore much more estimable than thousands who would take a pleasure in despising him, while they themselves are covered with profaneness. It is not for us to condemn, after all, a man who certainly honoured Christ, defended several fundamental Christian doctrines, took large pains in supporting what he took to be true religion, and ever meant to serve God. The Montanists, whose austerities were extreme, and whose enthusiasm was real, seduced at length our severe African, and he not only joined them, but wrote in their defence, and treated the body of christians from whom he separated with much contempt. He, in a great measure, left the Montanists afterwards, and formed a sect of his own, called Tertullianists, who continued in Africa till Augustine's time, by whose labours their existence, as a sect, was brought to a close." (Extracted from Joseph Milner, The History of the Church of Christ, p.267-275)

Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

As per this thread, dronald and I would like to do a duet of the shorter works of Tertullian. There are various sources because some translations are better than others (eg: this is more recent than this though still PD). We'll start with 10 sections and expand as we go. I will PL his sections and he mine. I'll do the BC work to the extent that it can't be two people (which perhaps it can be?).

In the desert,

I'd be happy to MC this for you. I'll get your MW set up, with you as BC and dronald as DPL - that way you can both access the MW to make whatever changes you need.

Since these will be coming from various sources, I'll set it up as a collection. In the MW you will need to click on the Magnifying Glass for each section and enter the text source. Don't worry about entering the author there, I'll do that once for the entire project.

Here's a useful resource as we add new sections: http://www.tertullian.org/works.htm

(Since we've been finding that the same work has several titles). It also lists different translations.

Would you be able to link what text you're reading from when a PL is ready? I see you've used this on prayer: http://www.tertullian.org/articles/souter_orat_bapt/souter_orat_bapt_03prayer.htm

Do we know for sure it's public domain? The wording is quite a bit different from the other sources we've been using. i.e. https://archive.org/details/antenicenefather03robeuoft/page/n11/mode/2up and https://archive.org/details/tertullian00tertgoog/page/n10/mode/2up

It's linked in the MW metadata. This one: https://archive.org/details/treatisesconcern00tertuoft/page/46/mode/2up
1919 so it's the most recent PD translation. You're free to PL without following along on the text!

Sorry but could you tell me how to find that in the MW? Thanks, I'm not sure where to look.

Press the magnifying glass next to any of the chapters (provided you are in BC admin).

PL Notes:

Marked with an asterisk are things that don't need changing - just notes for next time. The words in quotation marks are what I woulc consider non-standard pronunciations but if that is how those words are pronounced in your area, I'm happy to let them stand - just comment. It should be easy to find example pronunciations online.

The Chaplet
Good work on the names!
~ 10:25 - *Noteable cut
~ 14:50 - "Bosom"

An interesting text, lots of deep theological reflection combined with Tertullian's usual fire. And he has to bring head coverings into everything, doesn't he!

The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity
~ 3:05 & 24:58 - "Matron"
~ 17:14 - "Supine"
~20:04 - "Presbyter"
~27:44 - "Rivalling"
~ 28:05 - I heard 'in' instead of 'is'

I wonder to what extent Tertullian would endorse the doctrine implied by the quoted sections of the account

*Notable cut - Yes! Sometimes I notice I make a mistake and go back to fix it, and can't quite get the sound to be the exact same.

*Bosom - More like "Bussum" in your accent? That's how everyone here would pronounce it afaik.

*Matron - Yeah, I think "Maetron" pronunciation may have sounded better in hindsight. My pronunciation is commonly used too though, so I have no issue with it.

*Supine - I actually think this one's right!

*Presbyter - Yeah, this is definitely how we pronounce this here.

*Rivalling - Clear mistake by myself while reading through.

*in instead of is - I'll fix this one up too. I'm happy with The Chaplet if you'd like to approve that though.

Regarding the works themselves; it amazes me how zealous he was. It was neat reading The Martyrdom while considering his eventual conversion to Montanism. I expect it was because of stories such as the one penned by Perpetua that he believed in a continual prophecy. And perhaps it's due to his thoughts in his works in "The Chaplet" that he considered the orthodox to be less zealous. The man is telling people they should rather die than wear a crown! ...As you say. Fire.

I have fixed the errors.

If you have any advice on how to make audio splices less obvious, I would really appreciate it. It seems like the solution is worse than the problem no matter how hard I try.

Concerning Prayer PL notes:

10:46 Repeated phrase "for the Lord had also given the command: seek first the kingdom and then these things also will be added unto you"

16:42 Repeated phrase "to build on it"

Wonderful read. Well done.
