I would like to claim part 15 -LITTLE WOLFF'S WOODEN SHOES
Hi KtotheZ and a big welcome to LibriVox!

I have assigned that section to you
but before you record it, please make and upload a 1 minute test to be sure your recording set up is OK. Instructions can be found in our Wiki and in the first post of this project but Here is a video that may help too: How to Make your 1 minute test.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlaRY_-bcfs and then How to Upload your 1 minute test
How to Upload your 1 minute test
(You may post the link to your test in this forum and I will see it much more quickly)
I also recommend Getting To Know our Forums
Getting To Know Our Forums
We just want to check out your technical specs. Don't forget to post the link either in this thread or in Listeners WAnted forum. And how would you like to be credited in our catalog? What name? most of us use our real name but it is up to you.

Hi, I discovered what the issue was with the checker (sophos didn't like it!) and took care of it. I had scheduled the time to do this today, so I went ahead and did it, making sure that the file passed the checker without trouble. If you would like me to send another 'test' I can do that, too. (I would've done so before uploading this but ran out of time and had to go to work...)
In the meantime, this is the link to the file.

Track Length. 24:50.83
I hope this is ok.... that I went ahead and did the read.... (and I hope it sounds ok.)

That is fine Wendy. Your recording meets all tech specs and is at a volume of 91.9 (almost too loud, back off on the gain a bit next time) so you have the ok to record lots and lots. Our DPL will come along and check out the recording later.

EDIT: what was the problem with sophos? Others may need help with that too so I'm curious.

Thank you! I had fun with it.

The issue with sophos was that it identified as a 'gambling' site (!?!) so as I have that type of thing blocked on my 'puter, it wouldn't go through.. I watched a video about how to check when you get error messages stating that a website is not secure and that kicked off some thinking which led me to decide to investigate sophos. That's when I realized and was able to clear it up.. With regard to my volume, it's odd. I actually have the gain at 7.something and that was the result. Am not sure what the issue is, but I did trial and error, tweaking until I got there (had originally gone to the 'too loud' side, after I changed things around... ) anyhoo..... I will tweak down a bit more for next time as this is right at limit.
Look forward to feedback on the read. Thanks! Wendy

Hi there,
I'd enjoy recording Little Gretchen and the Wooden Shoe, number 34, if all goes well with my 1 minute test?
Regards
Lou

Wendy - I haven't put on my headphones yet - I'm off to do some early in-person voting first - but I do see a couple things when I open the chapter in Audacity.
1) Your closing silence is only 1-and-a-smidge seconds long - it should be 5 seconds. You can add silence in Audacity by going to the end of the recording (shortcue: press 'k') and selecting 'Silence...' from the 'Generate' menu. A box will open up and you can enter how many seconds of silence you want to add.
2) There are many places in the recording where your volume level goes all the way to the top. This creates clipping, which gives the recording a harsh sound. If your levels when you recorded were too high the clipping is recorded in and there's nothing you can do about it at this point (beyond recording the section over). To avoid this in the future set the record slider in Audacity lower. Don't worry about it being at 7 or 3 or whatever - the ideal level depends on your microphone and related hardware, how close to the microphone you are and your voice. In general if you see the level on the record meter go into red as you are recording you may be in danger of clipping.
For now, you can try lowering your overall volume in this recording by 2.9 dB and see if it sounds bad (clipped).
I'll listen to your chapter when I get back.
'Till later, then.

Well hi Lou, glad you jumped over into this book. I am assigning you section 34 and I can tell you that your test was fine because I just gave you the official OK.

Please ask if anything is confusing and welcome again.

Howdie right back. Thank you and that was fast! I will put this into the magic window for proof listening. A note: It is always best to claim a section like you did, but wait for the BC Book Coordinator to officially acknowledge your claim before recording a section. The BC has to keep everything straight and sometimes has assigned that section to someone else due to delays in the matrix or time zones or whatever. With that said, don't be shy about looking around for more sections in this or other projects.

Sorry Phil
No worries. I usually teach during the day but it's half term and with 5 teens and a puppy in the house I was a bit keen to find an excuse to hide away. I'll wait next time! I wouldn't be at all worried if you use someone else's. This is fun practice.
I've actually just updated it. I listened through and found a duplicated sentence.

Welcome and thank you for your recording; I will put it into the Magic Window for proof listening. But please note that the usual way we work is to first claim a section by posting a reply in the project thread asking for that section or 'claiming' it as we say. Then you should wait for the Book Coordinator (BC) then to acknowledge your claim by posting "great" or "all yours" or soomething like that before recording it. The BC has to keep everything straight and so must know when a section is claimed so it won't be given to someone else over night or whatever. Mixups have happened and people have recorded sections that could not be used. Anyway, thanks again and welcome. Don't be shy about asking for more sections!
So, Ignatius, the LibriVox Penguin of Happiness

will put this into the Magic Window for proof listening.
