Gulzara; or The Persian Slave by Anna Cora Mowatt Ritchie (1819 - 1870).

“Gulzara, The Persian Slave” is a rare example of a script for a Victorian melodrama that was intended as a private theatrical – to be performed by a limited cast of amateurs in a home or school, not on a public stage. Rarer still, “Gulzara” was written by a female author to be performed by a cast of women. The only male character, Amurath, was a “breeches role,” played by a young girl. Thus this drama, set in a harem in Constantinople, in addition to spinning a yarn about the abduction of Sultan Suliman’s son, gives us an unusual peek at the lives of young women in the U.S. in the 1840’s and 50’s. ( Kelly S. Taylor)
This project is complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/gulzara-or-the-persian-slave-by-anna-cora-mowatt-ritchie/

Rapunzelina will be our DPL for this project.

The part of the young boy, Amurath, is what Victorians called a “breeches role” and was always played by a young lady. In keeping with this tradition, gender neutral casting is welcomed for this character.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRDbXNjpw2RKhTYKEQeBZPVrIXdb4AuSIPAzhEMSrhHyeJ481GTKFCrffqajn-Rp9Wql5RwgCs9RW4F/pub
    5. For reference (for MC and DPL) an online copy of the original is available here: https://digital.library.villanova.edu/Item/vudl:472359#?c=&m=&s=&cv=2&xywh=-2103%2C-1%2C6304%2C3000
    6. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Todd,

I know this is an all female play, but just out of curiosity, would you want a male 'Stage Directions'?

Yes! I think a male voice reading the stage directions would give a nice contrast. Welcome to the cast!

Hi Wayne!

Here are my PL notes, but please wait for Kelly's comments, too, in case not all suggestions need to be acted upon. I noticed some differences between the original text and the google doc.

Act 1
1:20, missing "Zuleika (reclining on a couch), missing also from Google doc
At 4:23 I think it would help to add the name "Ayesha" (rising and making an inclination)

Act 2
0:19, I think it would sound better if it started with "Act 2 (scene 1)

Act 3
0:19, again I think it would sound better if it started with "Act 3 (scene 1)

Act 4,
0:20, I think it would sound better if it started with "Act 4 (scene 1)
1:08, missing "during (which time Ayesha sings), missing also from Google doc
1:57 text in the original is (after a moment Ayesha) re-enters", text in Google doc is "returns"
2:24, missing "Exit" before Scene 2.

Act 5,
0:20, I think it would sound better if it started with "Act 5 (scene 1)
At the end, not sure about the correct order, I would suggest "The End. End of Act 5. End of Gulzara, or The Persian Slave by Anna Cora Mowatt"

I agree with these suggestions and apologize for the mistakes in the Google Doc text!
