During the Persecution: Autobiography of Father John Gerard by Father John Gerard (1564 - 1637). Translated by G. R. Kingdon ( - )

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/during-the-persecution-by-father-john-gerard/
John Gerard (1564 – 1637) was an English Jesuit priest who operated covertly in England during the Elizabethan era, during which the Catholic Church was subject to persecution.

Gerard notably not only successfully hid from the English authorities for eight years before his capture but also endured extensive torture, escaped from the Tower of London, recovered and continued with his covert mission. After his escape to the Continent, he was instructed by his Jesuit superiors to write a book about his life. This is a rare first-hand account of the dangerous cloak-and-dagger world of a Catholic priest in Elizabethan England.

This book, from a later translation, is more well known under the title "Autobiography of a Hunted Priest". ( )
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/DuringThePersecution/page/n9/mode/2up
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Hi Maria,

You always find the most interesting books. May I record the Preface and Chapter 1?

Thank you, Maria.

Here is Chapter 1: https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/duringpersecution_01_gerard_128kb.mp3
Duration = 17:11

I was not sure how to pronounce "Fr. Persons" - I pronounced it exactly like that, but later looked him up and it seems he was also known as "Fr. Parsons". So I don't know if this is yet another example of British idiosyncratic pronunciation, so that "persons" is actually pronounced "parsons".

I would be happy to change the few spots where it occurs if you prefer the other pronunciation.

Also, if you like, I could take on Chapter 2, which seems to be the longest in the set. I would think it would take me a couple of weeks to do.

Thank you ~ it is PL OK!

I think pronouncing it how it sounds is fine. I wouldn't worry about it. :-)

Chapter 2 is yours! :D

Hi Maria,

I have been a bit busy and distracted lately, so I just wanted to let you know I'm still working on Chapter 2.
