London Labour and the London Poor Volume III by Henry Mayhew (1812 - 1887).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue page https://librivox.org/london-labour-and-the-london-poor-volume-iii-by-henry-mayhew/
Subtitled, "A Cyclopaedia of the condition and earnings of those that will work, those that cannot work, and those that will not work."

"The history of a people from the lips of the people themselves .. their labour, earnings, trials and sufferings, in their own unvarnished language, and to portray the condition of their homes and their families by personal observation of the places ..." "My earnest hope is that the book may serve to give the rich a more intimate knowledge of the sufferings, and the frequent heroism under those sufferings, of the poor ..."

Henry Mayhew was a social researcher and journalist. He compiled a four-volume work in minute detail on the lives of the poor in London, of which this is the third, published in 1851. ( Peter Yearsley)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/57060/57060-h/57060-h.htm
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks, Anne.

BTW, Gill, the last line in the summary should read "third" volume. Two to go!

I'll fix the summary.
Done, and I think I've made the title and file titles match the other 2 volumes. If you see anything I've missed let me know.

PL ok. Nearly word-perfect! Interesting subject.

There's a slight echo to your voice, Gill, but it's not intrusive.

Thanks, Peter! I recorded in a different room. I'll change back. (Although I recorded a few sections at the same time, so you'll probably find the same for a while yet.)

The link to Section 1 had disappeared for some reason, so I re-inserted it.

Section 2 PL okay, following standard rules.

There is a missing phrase which you may want to add. It's up to you:-

11th para after the Ratting illustration.

"Although the proprietor of the dog endeavoured to speak up for it, by declaring “it was a good ’un, and a very pretty performer,”

At 13.06 - "and a very good performer" is missing.

Thanks, Peter.
Please be as fussy as you like - I'd prefer it was right.
Thankfully, I kept my original long recording before chopping it into the first few sections, so it was an easy edit!

Edited Section 2 (35:27)

Perfect!

I always listen against the text, but I'll not comment on minor errors that don't alter the meaning, unless you ask for this.

Thanks, Gill.
