Wow, Aldo Manuzio's edition! I was starting to feel sorry for Sonia's eyes, but this is actually a lot easier to read than most 16th century or even 17th century books I've come across.

Sorry... just noticed the copyright notice at the bottom of every page. I didn't know you could copyright an image of a PD text, but I would say we can't use this particular scan, unless Sonia and Todd have a better understanding of this situation.

Ahi! That hurts!

Although, here: https://archive.org/details/ita-bnc-ald-00000877-001/page/n498/mode/2up , the date is specifically indicated as MDII, i.e. 1502. So legally they should not be able to claim a copyright on the words - as we are not visually reproducing the photo, the perspective, the lighting, the colours, the formatting of the page, the characters used to print the text; just reading the words which are in the photo. Those words legally should be considered free of copyright as they were printed in 1502.

excellent job, especially reading from this old script, not so easy to decipher. And the slight echo you put on your voice conveys the scene quite well.

Thank you, Sonia, and thank you Michael and Todd, for checking text, copyright and audio.

I spent a lot of time looking for a satisfactory edition - historical editions of the Divine Comedy are always so corrupted, full of typos, misprints and oddities of all sorts. This one was not too bad at all

Thanks for your contribution! Unfortunately, although the Infobox says that the source is in the public domain, that's not quite the case for our purposes. The reason is that we have to ensure PD status in the US, where our servers is located, and where a work enters PD 95 years after publication. Since your source is based on a 1928 publication, there's still a few years before we can use it.

We can read from a scan where the title page shows a publication year of 1924 or earlier (archive.org is a good place to look for these), or a text from gutenberg.org, or a text that is available in FullView at HathiTrust.org. Once you find a PD edition of this poem, please compare your reading to it and change any discrepancies to match that edition, or else record the text again from a PD edition. Don't hesitate to ask us about PD status of a text you're planning to use before recording it, or if you need help finding a PD source.

Also, we ask readers to tells us the length of their recordings (mm:ss).

This is from Ariosto’s Carmina. It’s a comic poem in Latin – an invective against Lena, patroness of… well, pimps, prostitutes and whoremongers…

Goliardic and gruesome…

Giosuè Carducci translated the poem in (proparoxytonic!) dactylic hendecasyllables in his first edition of “Odi barbare” – possibly having in mind a more metaphorical meaning?

Carducci’s invective was probably meant against literary criticism (and publishers!) which pressurises authors to produce works that are cheap in meeting the taste of their readers (sex without love == successful poetry without art). Perhaps something similar may have been also the intention of Ariosto (intellectual prostitution in Renaissance was like everyday business).

So pimps == publishers and literary critics; prostitutes == the authors (or us), and whoremongers == us (or the authors)…
