Who is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved? by Saint Clement of Alexandria (c. 150 - c. 215). Translated by William Fletcher (1810 - 1900)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/who-is-the-rich-man-that-shall-be-saved-by-saint-clement-of-alexandria/
This short treatise by St. Clement's is an exposition on the words of Jesus Christ to the young rich man, recounted in the gospels. In the account, the man asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. First, Jesus advises the man to obey the commandments, then Jesus adds: "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." However, when he heard this, "he became very sorrowful because he was very wealthy. Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.'" Does this mean that every Christian should give away their goods and become poor? St. Clement, an important Christian figure of the 2nd century, clarifies exactly what was meant by Christ. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I've listened to section 1. Interesting to hear his allegorical exegesis.

PL notes
There were a few words that I couldn't catch that impacted the meaning of the sentences.
4:16, you read "avarice" for "avaricious"
6:13, you read "and" for "the" which changes the meaning
10:20, "enigmatically" was unclear
14:23, "frolicsomeness" was unclear
15:02 "perilously" was unclear
17:50 "averred" should be stressed on the second syllable

Levels and background noise are all great!

Once you've changed them and reuploaded, can you switch the status to Ready for PL again?

By the way, if there any sections you feel are awkwardly done, let me know. I did this one a little too quickly. I don't mind doing redoing parts.

Section 1 PL OK.

He's very nuanced in what he says on wealth isn't he.

Section 2 PL Notes:
1:09 you say "substance" for "subsistence"
6:17 "subservant" for "subservient"
7:31 "repudate" for "repudiate"
13:08 "prolifigate" for "profligate"
15:42 "defy" for "deify"

Section 3 PL Notes

11:40 I hear "interloker" for "interlocutor".

Section 26 was very clarifying on what question he's seeking to answer.

He doesn't exactly stick to the point in his treatise. I like the random story at the end about St. John the Evangelist.

Anyway changes made.

PL Notes (Part 4)
3:45 "is" for "in"
4:00 "it is" for "as it is"
11:30 "expircation" for "extirpation"
18:38 "perpetuated" for "perpetrated"

I've spot checked part 2 & 3. Almost all complete. 2 small tweaks still:
In part 2, 13:09 "profligate" (should be proff - li - gate)
In part 3, 11:38 "interlocutor" (should be in - ter - lock - yew - tor)
Google also has pronunciations for both those words. Sorry or the hassle. We're almost done.

He says some things that I was surprised at in this section (the stuff that gets footnoted - Christ as the 'new creature', the father becoming 'feminine'). I liked the way he explained the temporariness of possessions.

Ah yes the feminine part, that was odd.

Anyway corrections made, except for the one @3:45 which sounded OK to me.

And we are all clear! PL OK.

Thanks for introducing me to Clement. His works are on my list of things to potentially record but I hadn't read any of them up to this point. The three more I have are:
Exhortation to the Heathen
The Paedagogus
Stromata

Are you intending to record any of those?

I think that was enough Clement of Alexandria for me. They're all yours.
