I have this sentence in my section:
though they are on the river about Louisiana, Mo., now, I suspect,
What does Mo. stand for??

Edit: another one at the end:
J. N. Baskett, in Mexico (Mo.) Intelligencer.
Cheers, Ava.

More fun with English, at least American English.

Oh, so it's a city, not the state.... No wonder that didn't make sense when I searched.

Thank you! :D

Confusingly, there are many U.S. cities that bear the name of another state or country, or other well-known cities, either U.S. or foreign.
The little state of Maine, alone, has 25 towns named for foreign countries or cities. To confuse things, many place names appear in multiple states. Towns named Springfield, for instance, are found in 33 states!
On the road again, so delays are possible
