[SOLO] The Beckoning Fair One by Oliver Onions (1873 - 1961).

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/the-beckoning-fair-one-version-2-by-oliver-onions/
"The Beckoning Fair One" is the most famous, and most widely anthologized, work by British author Oliver Onions. This novella, along with eight other stories, appeared in the collection Widdershins, published in 1911.
As a contemporary reviewer in the London literary magazine The Athenaeum (March 11, 1911) noted: "To write a good ghost-story is a test of several qualities in union... imagination, a sense of horror, a certain elusiveness, a vagueness, as it were, and not too close a definition.... Mr. Onions...certainly has all the qualities required to write a ghost-story. ... 'The Beckoning Fair One' is...a very successful example of what a ghost-story should be, without improper definition or ruthless explanation -- only atmosphere."
Indeed, the elusive "Fair One" may or may not be real; the protagonist Oleron may or may not be losing his grip on reality; and the dilapidated old house that is the setting for Oleron's disintegration may or may not have a malevolent will of its own. A dripping water tap, the hushed sound of a woman brushing her hair, fleeting shadows, a growing obsession... it all could be manifestations of a fevered imagination, or of a deadly supernatural haunting.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

MW filled in.
I put approximate word counts for each section.
Is this OK?
If not, I can adjust them.

Here's a weird & irritating little thing:

So far I have come across many "authoritative" statements regarding how the author pronounced his name, generally grouped into 3 categories:

(1) UN-YUNZ (like the vegetable)
(2) OH-NY-UNZ
(3) OH-NEE-ONNZ

For many years I thought it was (1).
Then I came across (2) in some hifalutin sources and was mortified at my youthful ignorance.
Then I read in a number of other sources that his family always pronounced it as (1).
And now I find (3), which is just too annoying.

I'll make an executive decision and pronounce it as (1).
I figure if I'm wrong, it's an understandable error because it's widely committed.
And it's better than using (2) and finding out it's wrong, because then I'll have been hoodwinked into sounding ignorant and pretentious.

I would go for (1), too. If it helps any, you can check how other librivox readers have pronounced it, if you haven't already https://librivox.org/author/1260

Yup, including the Britified readers ... they say the vegetable, so I'm in good company.
So long as I don't have to say "pomfrits," I'm happy. :P

Here is Part II:

https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/beckoningfairone_02_onions_128kb.mp3

Duration 20:44

The spell is cast....

N.B.:
At about 12:53, I say, "...after which it broke off into notes and jottings."
The text says, "...after which it broke on into notes and jottings."
That doesn't make sense, and more than one other source for the text says "off" instead of "on," so I changed it.
