OK, I think I have understood and re-edited. I amplified to fix the waves, but does that mean I now have unacceptable background noise?

Thank you Helen, the volume is low at 84.5 dB, you should aim for your waveforms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

Image

You can check your volume using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK) (all the other tech specs are there also)
Could you amplify and upload again please ?

Checker shows the background noise level at 50 dB or so, Noise Reduction would help.

I think we have a ghost in the machine Larry, everything about that file is wrong for this project.
