Call to Action!

Lisa / Murphy8104, You've already done section 18 - 8.2 Volcanic Evidence but the first half of that chapter has recently opened up again.

Is there any chance that you would take on the very last section in the Kangaroo project, Section 17 - 8.1 Volcanic Evidence?

I, and all the multitudes of thousands who will listen to Kangaroo by D. H. Lawrence would very much appreciate it.
Let me know please.

Thank you.

Kangaroo's cup runneth over!
Thank you very, very much Courtney.
I'll PL these two files later today.
Yaaay! Two excellent recitations!

Section 24 PL Notes
=========================
CHECKER shows that the audio for Section 24 is 87.6 it should be bumped up by 2.0.

from the 00:00 mark to about 03:33 mark the audio needs to be cleaned up. This is more plainly heard thru headphones. I think that just doing a simple noise reduction using the first minute as the "source" will clean up the whole file.

A wonderful reading! You carry off the dialog with great ease and naturalness.

====================================
Section 27 PL Notes

CHECKER shows that the audio for Section 27 is 87.6 it should be bumped up 92.0. It should be lowered by 2.0

I was fascinated by his description of the military draft induction procedures and people. The Puppy Doctor!!! I went thru all that back in 1963... not in England, but rather Louisville, Kentucky. It was humiliating.
I thought, angrily, at one point: "If *I* have to go let some stranger handle my genitals, why don't women have to do the same thing? It's not fair."

Then, a few years later, I saw the movie "Alice's Restaurant" with Arlo Guthrie. The military induction scenes shown there were hilarious!! It wasn't like that in real life, tho.

Sections 24 and 27 PL Notes Summary:
Fix up those volume things and you'll have provided two of the most admirable PL OK sections of this whole project! This whole chapter shows DHL at his best.

Fantastic, Courtney!
I spot checked Sections 24 & 27 and they are now PL OK!

It's late here in Florida, so I'll PL Section 17 tomorrow morning.
Thank you for moving so fast on these last 3 sections of the project.

Wow, Bill! Looks like everything is PL OK, and I've got the cover all ready to go. Be sure to review your summary and key words, post any changes here and as acting BC, I will alter them for you. And then, you can as we say . . . "pull the trigger"! :D

Thank you, everyone! I'm getting started on cataloguing; however, I notice one little snag that I should have seen when I set this project up. The problem is that part of the book description was taken from Wikipedia. We used to allow Wikipedia quotes to be used in descriptions, but we've been challenged on some of them, and Wikipedia is something of a PD gray area. So we don't do it anymore.

Michele or Bill, will one of you please remove those parts taken from Wikipedia and make sure that the whole thing is in your own words? Thanks!

Per my previous post, please halt cataloging until Bill has revised his summary and keywords. We knew from the beginning that we would be revising that at the end, after the book had been listened to and we knew what it was really about. (Remember, I am the BC in a mentorship capacity, helping Bill get used to the process. This is per his request and I've been glad to help.)

I didn't know we couldn't quote Wikipedia. I thought it was OK as long as we gave credit. So where do we BC's find out this information as it changes?

Revised Kangaroo Summary.

"Kangaroo" is the nickname of a character in this novel, Benjamin Cooley who was a charismatic leader in the fascist movement of ex-soldiers who fought in the Australian army in WWII.

The story's main character is an international journalist, Richard Lovat Somers who, with his wife, comes to rent a house next door to Jack Calcott and his wife who are natural-born Australians through-and-through. Jack is in league with Kangaroo and tries to persuade Lovat to join their political movement conflicting with the Socialist political faction in the country.

Throughout this book, there is an undercurrent of vaguely defined "Generalized Love" which borders closely on homosexuality between the otherwise testosterone-saturated Australian men.

Action-wise: There are riots and gunfights; but there are also moments of great tenderness of the men for their wives. Both Jack and Lovat dearly want to become "leaders of men", but Lovat backs away when he is recruited to join in an espionage campaign against the Socialists. Another undercurrent which muddies the waters for Lovat is that he is a true British citizen and thus resented by the Australians. (Summary by williamjones)

Keywords:
Australia, Espionage, Fascism, Socialism, anti-Communism, Aussie Mores and Morality

Yes, it used to be ok with credit given, but as I said, we've been challenged on it before and forced to change what we had. I couldn't tell you when that change happened, precisely. It was certainly before I became an MC, but that doesn't narrow it down much.

Unfortunately, there's no good system currently for sharing that kind of information with all BCs all at one time. :( It's been discussed, and developing one would be great, but so far no one has given a viable solution. In the meantime, it's a sort of "trickle-out" kind of thing, just addressing it as it arises.

Okay, just one question. You say "tries to persuade Lovat to join their political movement conflicting with the Socialist political faction in the country." My take on the story is that their political movement IS THE SOCIALIST POLITICAL FACTION." No?

Everything is ready to go on my end. (The numbers in the section titles were causing a sorting issue, but I managed to figure it out.) As soon as the above question is resolved, this is ready to go to archive.

Kangaroo, Jack and Jaz (James) and the other Nationalists are USING the Socialists to thwart the other parties (Labour, Fascists, Nationalists), but with the plan to take over from the Socialists when they've come to power and the public becomes disillusioned with them. The idea being that the Socialists will will preliminary elections but fail to capture the full commitment of the Australian voters. The Socialists break the ice, then the Nationalists move in.

Ok, I've just updated your summary and Keywords in the first post, but it looks like our MC has gone ahead and started cataloging without that step. It's been taken out of my hands. Sorry. I'll just take care of the cover when it's time.
