Civilian Clothes by Thompson Buchanan (1877 - 1937).

What happens when wartime romance and talents encounter the post-war civilian world?
<br>
"I'm going to take you to - " <br>
"Racine?"<br>
"If you're my wife you'll go with me to Hell!"<br>
"I'd rather go there than Racine."<br>
"Did anybody ever tell you that you were a snob?"<br>
( ToddHW)
  • Chris (Son of the Exiles) suggested this play. Looks like fun - hard to keep spoilers at bay.

    Gender neutral, of course.

AEF = American Expeditionary Force; DSC = Distinguished Service Cross; NA = National Army.

Sonia will play a possible femme fatale and will take time out to serve as our DPL.

This project is now complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page at: https://librivox.org/civilian-clothes-by-thompson-buchanan/

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/civilianclothesc00buch/mode/1up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Here’s Zack Hart with his bulldog voice. No one tames down the Bulldog!

Oh look, here’s comes Mrs Smythe with a silken leash ... and she gets to answer the question posed by Hart in Act 2, namely:

Hart: “How well do you make love?”

Hark! Is that the sound of virtual pages being rapidly flipped?

Well, now those new to the Librivox DR troupe get to hear Kitty’s “breathy” voice...

Cheers,
Chris

 oh it's launched already ! Getting this on my DPL list and yes, I claim the femme fatale Mrs Smythe (thanks Chris, for nagging me enough to give in  )

Sonia
I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April

Actually, I think it was the FedEx-ed pitcher of margaritas that did the trick.

Now all we have to do is work out if you are a Mrs Smythe with a short "i" like "Smith" or the classier long "i" which makes "Smythe" rhyme with "tithe".

Cheers,
Chris

I found that NA may mean "Naval Air" and checked what this could mean (sounded dubious to me). Seems like the navy also operates airforces: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_aviation

Thank you. And I'll check on the Naval Air possibility....

Something else while I'm PLing Chris' performance:

On p. 75 there is a part where "ALL - Ad lib." should be talking. (the first 4 lines) Now of course these sentences need not be spoken by all at the same time. Have you decided who should say what maybe and we could assign lines in the MW ? Or should I just ask them from everybody who is on stage at that point ?

the bulldog fell for Mrs Smythe hook, line and sinker in the third act  they will spend the rest of their lives wondering who tricked who into submission.

it's a great performance, Chris  Hart isn't the nicest of guys around though, a bit of a tough chappie, business-minded, ruthless. But he has a heart nevertheless, and tries to hide that fact under the gruff appearance. (you can't fool me  )

Good I heard this before I start my recording, gives me a few ideas...

Act 3 is already PL ok.

2 small things for Act 2:

> for the voice credit we usually say "read by" instead of "played by" but that is a minor point

> at about 0:55: (p. 75) missed 4 ALL ad lib. lines: "Pleasant day.... (etc) ... I'm a Bolshevik myself". Todd will use some lines from each of the party, so please include them all so he has a choice.

> at about 11:14: (p. 93) missed ALL line: "Money, what money ?"

thanks, a brilliant first role in !

If I get them from many people, I can decide when I edit what to use.

Thanks, Todd

ok then I'll ask them of everybody and you can pick what you think is best. I'll edit Chris' PL notes then. Thanks

Chris thinks I'd make a good Sam McGinnis, so who am I to refuse? I'd love to! :D
