The Empire Of Business, by Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-empire-of-business-by-andrew-carnegie/
This collection of essays by Scottish-American steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie, gathered from various periodicals and first published in book form in 1902, provides insight into one of history’s richest and most notable entrepreneurs/philanthropists. Carnegie shares his outlook on the economic situation in America at the turn of the 20th century, the state of the US oil, coal, rail, and steel industries, the relationship between capital and labour, individualism vs. socialism, the public/private sector partnership, the upward climb of humanity into prosperity, the importance of land and population, trade and the best uses of tariffs, etc. He also discusses the personal rewards of hard work, integrity, thrift, how to accumulate wealth, cultivation of the lifelong reading habit, use of libraries, and other advice for achieving success. Included is one of his most famous little essays, "The Three Legged Stool". (Summary by Michele Fry)
  • The DPL for this project is Michele Fry.
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/empireofbusiness1908carn
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Level of prooflistening: special (I will follow along with the text and notate any significant discrepancies.) Readers are expected to proof listen and edit their own work before uploading for a final check.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening!

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm working on setting this up, but I don't like the two different intros depending on section length. That's a practice that has snuck into projects lately without discussion, and is confusing for listeners and readers IMHO.

The shortened disclaimer was meant for short poetry, not for any little section in a larger project.

If you'll agree to the standard intro, I'll MC this. Otherwise, I'll pass.

Hi, Michele,

I know this is quite early, but if I might, I would like to put a claim in for "The Three Legged Stool" to start out with.

Thanks,

Wayne

I was following Amy's instructions and thought it had become LV policy. A good policy. It is really very nice to NOT hear that blatant advertisement repeated so often throughout every file on every project, especially with many short sections like my coffee break, dreams and short stories projects. I wish it would be made policy, it would be good for us, but it doesn't affect this project much as there are only 3 short sections, so I think I'll keep ya if you will still have me! :D
