That would be great Bookworm, please set up the project, I can look at it later this evening. We have a grandchild staying with us so LV is very restricted at the moment.
Have you been BC before?

Erm, no, but I took the BC readiness quiz and could answer all the questions. Now I want to see if I can put it in practice(and this weekly/fortnightly thing is just great.)🤗

Welcome!

This is a suggestion thread, not a place to submit recordings. "There will come soft rains" was the weekly poem back in 2010. :) The current one is here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=81658

If you want to salvage this recording, you could submit it to the Short Poetry Collection. The current one (to the end of the month, so hurry!) is here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=81152 Follow the instructions in the first post.

(Note that your file name is incorrect. If/when you submit files, please name them according to the naming scheme in the first post of the project thread.) ;)

I would like to BC this poem for a weekly poetry project:

The Growth of Love
By Robert Bridges

Sonnet 38

An idle June day on the sunny Thames,
Floating or rowing as our fancy led,
Now in the high beams basking as we sped,
Now in green shade gliding by mirror'd stems;
By lock and weir and isle, and many a spot
Of memoried pleasure, glad with strength and skill,
Friendship, good wine, and mirth, that serve not ill
The heavenly Muse, tho' she requite them not:

I would have life—thou saidst—all as this day,
Simple enjoyment calm in its excess,
With not a grief to cloud, and not a ray
Of passion overhot my peace to oppress;
With no ambition to reproach delay,
Nor rapture to disturb its happiness.

An unusual little poem, possibly for the weekly list.

Among the Rice Fields

She was fair as a Passion-flower,
(But little of love he knew.)
Her lucent eyes were like amber wine,
And her eyelids stained with blue.

He called them the Gates of Fair Desire,
And the Lakes where Beauty lay,
But I looked into them once, and saw
The eyes of Beasts of Prey.

He praised her teeth, that were small and white
As lilies upon his lawn,
While I remembered a tiger's fangs
That met in a speckled fawn.

She had her way; a lover the more,
And I had a friend the less.
For long there was nothing to do but wait
And suffer his happiness.

But now I shall choose the sharpest Kriss
And nestle it in her breast,
For dead, he is drifting down to sea,
And his own hand wrought his rest
"I think, therefore I am, I think." Solomon Cohen, in Terry Pratchett's Dodger

:D :D :D I would like to read Jack London's "The Mexican" - can someone help me on going through the process of claiming first short story? I've only contributed to the larger project so far.

Thanks, and I can't wait to do it.

That's where you would submit it.

I've just seen that 19 September is Hartley Coleridge's birthday. He's been in his father's shadow somewhat and hasn't been a weekly/fortnightly pick for a little while, so I'd like to propose two of his sonnets:

Sonnet IX

Long time a child, and still a child, when years
Had painted manhood on my cheek, was I,–
For yet I lived like one not born to die;
A thriftless prodigal of smiles and tears,
No hope I needed, and I knew no fears.
But sleep, though sweet, is only sleep, and waking,
I waked to sleep no more, at once o’ertaking
The vanguard of my age, with all arrears
Of duty on my back. Nor child, nor man,
Nor youth, nor sage, I find my head is grey,
For I have lost the race I never ran:
A rathe December blights my lagging May;
And still I am a child, tho’ I be old,
Time is my debtor for my years untold.

Sonnet IV

Let me not deem that I was made in vain,
Or that my Being was an accident,
Which Fate, in working its sublime intent,
Not wish’d to be, to hinder would not deign.
Each drop uncounted in a storm of rain
Hath its own mission, and is duly sent
To its own leaf or blade, not idly spent
‘Mid myriad dimples on the shipless main.
The very shadow of an insect’s wing,
For which the violet cared not while it stay’d,
Yet felt the lighter for its vanishing,
Proved that the sun was shining by its shade:
Then can a drop of the eternal spring,
Shadow of living lights, in vain be made?

A very short poem for a possible Weekly? This poet doesn't appear to be in the LV catalogue yet:

Duty

Ellen Sturgis Hooper (1812–1848)

I SLEPT and dreamed that life was Beauty:
I woke and found that life was Duty:
Was then thy dream a shadowy lie?
Toil on, sad heart, courageously,
And thou shalt find thy dream to be
A noonday light and truth to thee.

Another suggestion for a weekly Poem:

Author: Richard Le Gallienne (1866 -1947)

Text link: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10913

Published in 1895.

AN EPITAPH ON A GOLDFISH
(WITH APOLOGIES TO ARIEL)

Five inches deep Sir Goldfish lies,
Here last September was he laid,
Poppies these that were his eyes,
Of fish-bones were these bluebells made.
His fins of gold that to and fro
Waved and waved so long ago,
Still as petals wave and wave
To and fro above his grave.
Hearken too! for so his knell
Tolls all day each tiny bell.

Cheers
