One Act Play Collection 014 by Various ( - ).

(To be adjusted:) Here, in our 13th collection, are 10 One Act Plays for your enjoyment. They range from ... and many other short gems to make you laugh, cry, think, or all three. NOTE: Although the plays here were all published before 1923 and hence are in the Public Domain in the U.S., XYZ died in ABC respectively and their plays may not yet be in the Public Domain in some countries. (ToddHW)
  • This project is complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/one-act-play-collection-014-by-various/

This collection will be limited to 10 plays. Once we have 10 this will be closed to further additions.

This collection is now closed to more plays.

Please see the list below in the thread for previous plays. It would be nice to have new ones to add to the collection.

Please Note: Some plays are not PD for readers in Europe and/or Australia, and other countries which observe copyright of author's death +70 years. These are identified below and in the MW.

    1. (DONE) The Lover by Gregorio Martinez Sierra (1881-1947), Translated by John Garrett Underhill (1876-1946) (BC for this play is ToddHW)
    Text: https://archive.org/details/cradlesongotherp00martiala/page/72/mode/2up
    Publication Date: 1922
    Author Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorio_Mart%C3%ADnez_Sierra
    Gender Neutral Casting

    2. (DONE) England's Easter by George Logan (?? -??, but wrote in 1890s or earlier) (BC for this play is Salvationist)
(PD text link: https://www.salvationarmy.org.uk/index.php/about-us/international-heritage-centre/international-heritage-centre-resources/digital-collections/darkest-england-gazette - This link is to a page containing downloadable PDFs of a variety of issues and portions of issues of The Darkest England Gazette. The PDF for this play is the third listed under the "Poetry and songs" heading.)

    Publication date: March 24, 1894
    Gender specific casting

    3. (DONE) “The Bloomer Costume; or The Figure of Fun” by Edward Stirling (BC for this play is ktaylor07)

    PD Text Link: https://archive.org/details/TroughtonShortSweet
*Note* There is a copy at http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/52661 which might be easier to read.
However, there is a mistake in Mr. Sweet's line in the Gutenberg copy (pg 5). It reads "Why, my dear Mrs. Sweet, you heart the whole thing canvassed this morning between me and Mrs. Short, and you never made the smallest objection." (heart should be heard). The correct line can be seen on page 5 of the archive.org copy.
    Original Publication Date: 1861

    5. (DONE) "Hester's Mystery" by Arthur Wing Pinero (BC for this play is toddhw)

    6. (DONE) "Sweet and Twenty" by Floyd Dell (1887 - 1969) (BC for this play is MManolakes)
While this play is PD in the US, Dell died in 1969 and so this play is not PD for readers in Europe and/or Australia, and other countries which observe copyright of author's death +70 years.

How to volunteer to BC a play:
This is a great opportunity for anyone who's always wanted to BC a dramatic reading but isn't quite ready to do a full-length play. (Of course it's open to experienced BCs as well!) Please note that if you propose a play for inclusion in the collection, you are responsible either for editing, proof-listening and coordinating it yourself, or for finding other volunteers to fill these roles. Volunteers outside the USA: Be aware that some of the plays are still protected by copyright law some places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years).

Please look at the list of plays that have previously been submitted before choosing a play to co-ordinate. Please claim your play in the thread; You will be the BC for your play. I will put files in the MW and keep that up to date but you are expected to Proof Listen submitted parts and then edit the play together when all parts are submitted. This collection is capped at 10 plays. Each BC needs to provide the following information about each play:

    * Title and author
    * PD text link
    * Link to author on Wikipedia, and death date, if known
    * Link to title on Wikipedia
    * Number of roles (including narrator) this project will have
    * Original publication date
    * The list of characters in your plays so when we have a MW I can set up your sections properly!

If you would like to claim a role yourself please do so. Below are some resources you can use to find a play, but don't feel limited to these. Also, remember to check what has already been recorded in the previous One-Act Play Collections (see next post in this thread)

    Fifty Contemporary One-Act Plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36984

The Atlantic Book of Modern Plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/16435

    Washington Square Plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3068

    Comtemporary One Act Plays http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37970

Voces Populi by F Anstey http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37597

King Arthur's Socks and Other Plays by Floyd Dell http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/6587 Not PD for Europe/Australia

    https://archive.org/details/fourthactplayino00hast

Project Gutenberg also has a list of many authors who have written one-act plays: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/One_Act_Plays_(Bookshelf)

Readers: to find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

    Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I have never BC'd a play before, and I would like to start with a short play in this collection. May I do the following?:

Title: England's Easter - This play was first published in The Darkest England Gazette, a weekly publication issued by The Salvation Army between July 1893 and June 1894.

Author: George Logan - Logan was a regular contributor to The Darkest England Gazette, but nothing more is known about him (as indicated in the "Poetry and songs" research guide also available for download via the PD text link).

PD text link: https://www.salvationarmy.org.uk/index.php/about-us/international-heritage-centre/international-heritage-centre-resources/digital-collections/darkest-england-gazette - This link is to a page containing downloadable PDFs of a variety of issues and portions of issues of The Darkest England Gazette. The PDF for this play is the third listed under the "Poetry and songs" heading.

Link to author on Wikipedia: Not applicable

Author death date: Unknown

Link to title on Wikipedia: Not applicable

Number of roles (including narrator) this project will have: Five

Original publication date: March 24, 1894

List of characters in the play: Jesus (male), Martha (female), Mary (female), Britannia (female), Narrator (neutral) - If this submission is accepted, is it possible for me to require the roles to be gender correct? Also, I would like to sign up to narrate this play if that is allowed.

I will set this up for you.

In order to give us a better etext link, for our listeners, would you be able to upload the play to Archive.org? An indirect Poetry download link such as you provided may quickly vanish; Archive will not.

Yes, you may narrate. As BC, you will also have to do, or arrange for someone else to do, PL of reader submittals and the final play, and the editing of parts into the play.

Thanks, Todd

I would be glad for you to read Mary, Sonia! This is my first time BCing a play in one of these collections and I just tried logging into the Magic Window, but it wouldn't let me. Todd, are you the only one who can manipulate the Magic Window for this collection?

yes only MCs, BCs and DPLs can access the MW for any particular project. Since this project has many BCs and PLers, they will not all have access. Todd will update the MW for them. That's why the collection is a sort of "learning ground" for budding new drama BCs. They take on a few responsibilities already (like editing, accepting claims, answering specific questions for their play etc) but don't have the added hassle of the MW yet.
