Gallegher and other Stories by Richard Harding Davis (1864 - 1916).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/gallegher-by-richard-harding-davis/

Set in 1890's USA, teen detective Gallegher is a copy boy for a local newspaper, but due to his superior sleuthing and feisty Huck Finn attitude, he ends up solving a serious crime. Walt Disney thought enough of the spunky Gallegher story to make a TV series of it back in 1965. Of course, Gallegher is only one of the 9 other interesting stories included, all period pieces, with interesting characters, all interestingly told. ( ~ Michele Fry)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

    NOTES TO READERS:
1.) For continuity, I would like stories with multiple parts to be read by the same reader.
2.) One character, Van Bibber, appears in multiple stories. Bibber rhymes with "fibber" (someone who tells lies).

    .
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    .
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://gutenberg.org/files/5956/5956-h/5956-h.htm
    .
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
    .
    Level of prooflistening: standard
Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ for directions!
    .
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Ah, Thanks! I'll get the MW filled in today.

How did you set up a page with just your solos? I like that, and had no idea you had done so many, and tackling War and Peace, too! Ambitious lady!

MaryAnn, The MW is filled in, and there are two extra sections at the end that need to be removed.

I've deleted the extra sections and moved to readers wanted.

I find the section titles to be very unclear. If I were to read section 3, what am I to say in the intro? If I follow the instructions in the first post, I get "Section 3 of Gallegher and other Stories by [author, disclaimer.] Recording by MaryAnn. Chapter 1.3, part 1 of 3, 1.3 Gallegher, A Newspaper Story."

IMO, to a listener, it would be much clearer to hear "Section 3 of Gallegher and other stories by [author, disclaimer.] Gallegher, A Newspaper Story, part 3 of 3". It would also be much easier for a new reader to figure out what they were to say in the intro if the section title was "Gallegher, A Newspaper Story, part 3". Since these are independent stories, the chapter numbers don't really help a listener follow along -- it's the section numbers and part references that tell a listener where they are.

In at least one story's text, there is a notice [but in brackets] regarding an illustration and the spelling out of the caption. Do you want that read at any point?
