Letters of Oscar Wilde, Volume 2 (1890-1895) by Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)

This project is complete! Please download and listen from the catalog: https://librivox.org/letters-of-oscar-wilde-volume-2-1890-1895-by-oscar-wilde/

This second collection of the correspondence of Oscar Wilde includes letters written when the Irish playwright was at the height of his success. Wilde defends several of his works from criticism and even censorship, and writes "prose poems" to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, that will eventually be read out in court. The letters, some of which have been excerpted or redacted, are sourced from auction catalogues, newspapers, biographies, and other texts in the public domain. For a complete collection of Wilde's letters, please see "The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde," (2000) edited by Merlin Holland and Rupert Hart-Davis. (Rob Marland)
Text source (only read from this text!): I will read from multiple sources, which can be found here (this spreadsheet will be deleted when the project is finished): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hVkrUSyMzhFtsu_-3eUOMYMOoDgMuvVwdcerglwlo3I/edit#gid=0

Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello, Rob, I can set this on up for you

ETA:
Here we go.

Thank you for including the spreadsheet with sources (and good detective work to identify them all!). I know you're on your way to finish the first volume of Wilde's letters, so you know the drill about adding the sources in the MW etc. Do you have a handle on the order of the letters (and how they will sort once it is cataloged)?

I think I've got a handle on it, yes. If I understand correctly, including a section number in the filename of each mp3 will mean that the project will maintain its ordering once it is in Archive. Is that right?

Good afternoon -

This looks like a very scholarly project and I wouldn't mind DPLing for it, but I was just looking for the link to the text and I can't immediately locate them in the spreadsheet that this is linked to. Is it possible that this spreadsheet at the top of the MW corresponds to Volume 1? I was going to listen to the first link, but can't seem to locate it.

Hi Daniel,

I’d be happy to have you onboard as DPL if you want to. There is one spreadsheet for all 6 projected volumes. It automatically opens on volume 1. Look at the bottom of the page to see the other 5 tabs.

Rob -

This is excellent.

PL Notes Section 1

Observations: Since this section is technically the first in the anthology, I’m wondering if the introduction should perhaps include the overall title of the collection prior to mentioning the specific letter.

For example: “Letters of Oscar Wilde Volume 2 from Oscar Wilde Art and Morality by Stuart Mason (1890-1895), recording by Rob Marland. (PAUSE) 'Exchange with the Editors of the St. James’s Gazette 26-28 June 1890' (PAUSE)This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org. (PAUSE) MR. WILDE'S BAD CASE....”

Here are the PL notes for the rest of the recording. I believe all of these constitute minor errors and comments and that, per the Librivox guidelines, they don’t warrant a change to the recording; but I’ll let you decide whether you’d like to revise any of these:

* Between approximately 2:17: and 2:20 the sound is mildly distorted though it's still clear.

* 4:02 - There is a repeat at the point where you say “…but to its dullness and stupidity.”

“To say that such a book as mine should be "chucked into the fire" is silly. That is what one does with newspapers.”

* 16:04 - The text reads “In your complaint of misrepresentation you seem to me, Sir, to have been not quite candid.” - I hear “to have not been quite candid.”

* 17:02 - “…treatment and subject-matter of the literary artist…” - I hear “of a literary artist…”

I've marked sections 4 and 5 PL OK. In section 5 I did notice one discrepancy between the text and the recording:

0:33 - text says “…on which it might be treated”. I hear “….on which it may be treated”.

Regarding my PL notes for section one, I seem to have botched the wording I proposed. What I meant to say was that I think that the very first introduction in your collection needs to clarify for blind listeners that they've downloaded the first section in a series and explain what the name of the collection is at the offset. So the words "The Letters of Oscar Wild, Volume 2 (1890-1895)" should precede everything, including the specific letter you're about to read.

Thanks. I added the intro to section 1. In fact, I had already recorded it but must have accidentally edited it out. Your other comments on sections 1:
JachinandBoaz wrote: July 28th, 2020, 4:59 pm * Between approximately 2:17: and 2:20 the sound is mildly distorted though it's still clear.
I couldn't hear this distortion, so I didn't change anything here.

Thanks for spotting. Fixed.

I don't need the recordings to be word perfect, so please feel free to ignore any differences that don't change the meaning.
