The Dragon Queen of Jupiter by Leigh Douglass Brackett (1915 - 1978).

This project can now be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/the-dragon-queen-of-jupiter-by-leigh-douglass-brackett/

The DPL for this project is Linny.
The French Foreign legion has been exported to Space as the Space foreign legion. Can these besieged troops survive on a world intend on killing them and with a command that is indifferent to their survival? They are fighting now on Jupiter and the natives, led by their Dragon Queen, are winning, killing them slowly but surely. Earth and Mars need places for people to live and grow food but Jupiter may be too hard a nut to crack. Will the Legion be able to hold off the hordes Beetle Bombs and venomous snakes until a relief column arrives? Or will they die in horrible pain like most of them already have? And then the Dragon Queen uses the ultimate weapon, a parasite that stops them from drinking any water.( phil chenevert )

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I am working on this. I love the way this lady writes and wonder why I've not done more stories by her.

Part 1 is ready for PL. Note that at 23:13 I changed the text from Venus to Jupiter. It was obviously a typo since this story takes place on Jupiter.
And then hordes of white-haired warriors would swarm out, led by that beautiful fury on the winged lizard, rouse the more lethargic pastoral tribes against the colonists, and sweep outland Peoples from the face of Venus.
I take full responsibility for this. :D

Part 1
12:03 – word change (not sure it matters too much) - Tex fired steadily at fierce white heads thrust above the parapet. The man next to him stumbled against the infested stones. The voracious scarlet flood surged over him, and in forty seconds his uniform sagged on naked bones.
I hear infected

20:08 word change - "Because," said Breska grimly, "on Mars there are men and women breaking their backs and their hearts, to get enough bread out of the deserts. You're a city man, Kuna. Have you ever seen the famines that sweep the drylands? Have you ever seen men with their ribs cutting through the skin? Women and children with faces like skulls?
I hear families

(My husband and I had a good laugh at your signature line joke.)

Part 1 corrected and uploaded again. I knew there was something strange about the 'families' sentence but simply did not see the right word.
I am glad you appreciated my signature. To be truthful, every time I see it it still makes me smile.

Part 2
21:17 – would you like to change this word as well? - "Here we are, being noble till it hurts, and it won't matter a damn. The Skipper was right. It's the rust that'll lose us Venus in the end—that, and these Dry Spots."

24:37 word change - Then it wasn't rust! And Tex realized something else. There were no rust flakes falling from the net.
I hear into

That was a fun little story. :D

Yes, I completely overlooked that second Venus thanks for catching it. Part 2 has been repaired and uploaded.
And this was a good story to read with interesting dialog and fun emotions to act out but the arrogant colonial assumptions were very indicative of the times. we must 'civilize' the natives .. or kill 'em, whichever seems easiest. I also liked the idea of a French Foreign Legion in space filled with desperate men running away from their pasts. Also cool. AND I got to sing!!!!

It’s a wonderful performance. I enjoyed how many changes you were able to do in such a little story. Certainly need to find more by this author.

Part 2 is spot check pl ok. I’m not at my computer so I can’t toggle the workflow but it really is pl ok. :D
