Dante's hel door Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321). Vertaald door Hein Boeken (1861 - 1933)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/divina-commedia-hel-by-dante-alighieri/

abandoned solo, to be finished by another reader

Waarom?

Bedankt!

Hi,

Ik heb een paar vragen (p.s. please let me know if this should be in English or not)

Dominique,

I would be happy to MC this for you. Let me go through your questions and provide answers. I don't speak Dutch, but have the benefit of google translate ... so it doesn't matter to me what language you write in, as long as it's ok if I write my answers in English.

Yes, it's ok to read from the dbnl PDF. I see the publication date printed on p 5 of the scan and can use that to confirm that you are reading from a public domain source.
    .
Reading footnotes is optional - at the readers discretion - so you can include them all, include only those that are particularly interesting, or leave them all out. How to read them is a challenge because they are linked to line numbers in the poems. I suggest that you make each canto as a separate audio file, and read the corresponding notes for that canto at the end of that audio file. This way, they are easy to find (because they are with the text they relate to) and easy for a listener to skip because nothing follows them.

I suggest you read them as follows: "Notes - Eerste Zang. Line 1, [text quoted in italics] [short pause] [explanation in note]. [short pause] Line 17, Die planeet [short pause] [explanation in note], etc." That is similar to the approach I took in a bible commentary -- if you want to hear how it goes, check out this project, section 1, where the notes start at 7:50. https://librivox.org/expository-thoughts-on-the-gospels-st-john-vol-1-by-j-c-ryle/ Starting with the line number gives the listener an idea whether the note relates to the beginning, middle or end of the canto. And the text quoted at the beginning of the note tells the listener just what is being explained. So I think an interested listener will be able to understand the notes quite well, and they can go back and listen to the canto again if they want to hear the word/phrase in context.

    .

    .
On poetry, you don't read the line numbers. As to the comments before each canto, we read the book as written, even if that means it sounds a bit odd, or is a bit difficult to follow, to a listener. I think if you read the comments referencing "lines 1-69" and "lines 70 to the end", the reader will understand that the second comment relates to the second half of the canto without needing to change what the author/translator wrote ...
    .
    .
Well, we prefer to stay with the title that the author/translator gave the book. In our catalog, the other versions of this work are titled "The Divine Comedy - The Inferno" or La Divina Comedia - Infierno", or "Die göttliche Komödie - Die Hölle", so let's stick with that format for the Dutch version.
.
Ik hoor het graag. Heb ontzettend veel zin in dit project ^^

Hi MaryAnn,

That would be great, thanks :-) And thank you for the extensive answers and link to your example. I think reading the notes that way won't be too intrusive indeed. And actually, looking at the notes again, they aren't as long as I thought they were on first viewing. Mostly the notes on the first and second canto's are quite extensive, but they're not representative of the length of all notes.

And in keeping with the title format, "Divina commedia. Hel" would be the better option indeed.

Dominique,

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.
Note that passwords for the magic window and the forum are not connected. You can use the same password in both places (I think a lot of people do), but if you change it on one system, it won't affect the password on the other system.

Next, you'll need to start entering section (or chapter) titles. I've entered the first couple to get you started.

Then you are ready to start recording. When you upload a section, it's your responsibility to add the link and duration (mm:ss) to the Magic Window. Link from the uploader goes in the "listen URL" column, duration goes in the "notes" column. Then be sure to post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL so your DPL knows there is something new.

We won't worry about a DPL just yet - folks often see new projects and volunteer to listen before anything is posted. If no one sees this, we will advertise once you have a section or two ready to listen to.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a book you're excited about so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Hello Dominique

wow a big project you have set yourself here. I just listened to your first section, to assess whether I could do it. I don't speak Dutch, but I speak very well German and Luxembourgish, so I figured, it might not be too far off the mark ;) And indeed, I understood basically everything, and trusting you that you pronounce your mother tongue correctly  I soon get the hang of how the spelling is pronounced.

So if you want, I can assist as DPL in this project. I have a lot of DPL jobs, so I cannot promise a very fast feedback immediately, also, the concentration in an unfamiliar language is quite exhausting, so I cannot do too many sections in one go, but I will stick with it till the end, if you do.

So for section 1 I have two small notes:

> for the intro disclaimer, in a solo you can use the "abbreviated" disclaimer from the second section onwards. I don't know if you want to use that, you don't have to if you don't want to. But if you do, and if you read the introduction as well, then this here is your second section and you can change the disclaimer. Also, maybe you don't know, you can opt to leave out the introduction, if you wish, it's optional, just like the footnotes. So if you don't read the introduction, then of course this section is the first and you need the long disclaimer.

> at 1:01: (p. 1) "ik weet niet wel" - I hear a bit more, something like "ik shall nie weet te wel" - ok since I am not familiar with the language, I cannot decide whether this is changing the meaning at all. So I leave it up to you if you want it word perfect or not. I will continue checking with the text, otherwise I cannot find any errors. I will note down everything I notice, and if you decide it doesn't change the meaning, then you can leave it, if it's not too much discrepancy (of course).

Interesting that you also include the footnotes. In fact, if you don't want to, you can leave them out, it's up to you. But I found them very interesting, so good choice. I would only say for future recordings, try not to exceed more than 2 seconds of silence between paragraphs (or footnotes). It feels awfully long for a listener to have such a long silence before the text starts again.

So there is no need to re-record it all from scratch ! In fact, it's too much work for both of us if you do ! (so don't  ) If you want to edit, just re-record that one sentence and copy/paste it in your masterfile. :)

Will try to do section 2 tomorrow.

Sonia
I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.
