Hi! This is my first short story recording for Librivox! Feedback is appreciated.

The Charmed Ring by Joseph Jacobs and John Dickson Batten

(17:06)

Thank You!

P.S.- I did ask someone to put my name in the catalog last week, but they haven't yet. Do you mind doing it, or should I wait one more week? (My name is inspri)
Hi, Inspri!

Please forgive me for the extra time - I ended up taking yesterday off from LibriVox, as the day was AMAZINGLY beautiful, and my husband and I spent it outdoors to enjoy it while it lasted. Which turned out to be a great thing, as this morning there is an ugly haze and the smell of distant wildfire in the air. :(

Your recording is terrific! I had never known this tale, so I enjoyed hearing it very much.

That was your first one? You're a natural - glad to have you here at LibriVox! The specs are all correct, your pacing is perfect, diction is clear, and volume is inside the LibriVox requirements. (It is a little on the lower end of the decibel range, so if you ever feel like it, you can increase the recording volume a small amount.)

I found no repeats or stumbles needing attention. The end silence is good. The front silence is a little bit too long - it is supposed to be between .5 and 1 second, but it is 1.5 seconds.

Could you reopen your recording, zoom in on the track so you can see the .5 second spacing bars, and then clip out .5 second from the front. When I do this on my tracks, I choose a part of the line that has a blip or tick in it, so whatever that little click in sound was, it gets erased - but don't cut out part of an actual word. :D (Let me know if you don't know yet how to clip out part of a recording.)

After you do this edit, re-export the file to mp3 again (you can simply overwrite your first mp3), then upload that new version the exact same way you uploaded the first time, and post here that link and the new length of time.

Thank you very much for this contribution!
Thank you for the feedback! Sorry for waiting so long. Here is the revised version.

Hey! Does anymore need doing? Im more then happy to do a chapter if ones still available!? x
Hi, NinaSteph :)

It would be great to have you do a recording for one of the sections here. Before you do that, though, you should do the 1-Minute Test (which isn't really a test at all, just a process to make sure your system is set up properly before you go through all the work of doing a full section somewhere).

You would have received a welcome email, and that should have a link in it to get to the test instructions. If you can't find it, send me a message and I'll help get you there. :) I remember fumbling around quite a bit when I first started.

In the meantime, I'll reserve a section for you for a couple of weeks.
Hello, NinaSteph :)

As we haven't heard back from you yet regarding recording, I'm going to release this hold on the section in this collection. If you return and get your system OK'd, I'd love seeing you do a section for this project, or for Collection 3 (if we've moved onto that one by then).

Wishing you the best!

Hello,
I want to take section 9.
here is my test recording link.

https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_vaishalisagar.mp3
Hi there! Welcome to LibriVox :)

I will reserve a section for you. Before you record that, though, let's fine tune your set-up.

The test recordings are supposed to be posted on the Listeners & Editors Wanted board, but I did check out your test file.

The specs are set properly, but the volume is lower than LibriVox needs it to be. It comes in at only 82.2 decibels - it needs to be between 86 and 92.
Also, there are several plosives (places where consonants are popping).

These are easy fixes. :) Try the recording again, but slide the recording volume up a little bit speak a little bit further from the microphone. Let's see if that fixes both issues.

When you've done the sentence again with those changes, export it to mp3 again (maybe name it test2_vaishalisagar), upload it like you did your first recording, and post the new link in this thread: Listeners & Editors Wanted. I'll look for it there. :)
Hi, Vaishali! :)

I hope all is well for you. We're looking forward to having your help in our project. I haven't heard back from you, so I don't know if you're still intending to record here. I'm going to release the section I've held on reserve, but if you do return, I will very happily set another one for you. - And if Collection 2 is filled, we'll put you on Collection 3. :D

Thanks, Laurel. beautifully submitted. :) I've got it in the PL queue - hopefully to be done today (construction going on here, though, and they often pull me away from what I'm working on with questions)

Hi, Laurel!

I wanted to update you about your section - It's not forgotten! It's frustrating to me that I haven't been able to PL it yet. The mold-mitigating team installed these machines in the house last Monday, running 24/7, that are so loud, it's really like having jet engines here. The main floor has a constant vibration that sets my teeth on edge, too. With the noise going, I can't hear files enough, even with my headphones, to judge background noise levels, and I think there might be something in your file. As soon as these machines get turned off, I'll have a listen and will be able to let you know if something needs adjusting. :)
I'm hopeful that this afternoon the machines will be taken away, when their testing returns from the lab.

Pleeaasse let them be removed today!!!!!! lolol

Ok, so according to Anne (our Australia expert) this was originally published in 1923. So the story is PD in the US
However, what is the provenance of this version? It isn’t a scan and there is no copyright date... bad news.
Also, Anne was unable to find info on the author, which suggests his work may not be PD for Australian readers.
If the reader can show either he is in the US or that he has a bio on the author, we should be able to use it, otherwise, I’m afraid not.
Help us finish:

Hi, Laurel! The machines are finally gone, and I'm working on my backlog!

Hey, this is a fantastic reading. Your style is terrific. The file does have a lot of background hum that needs to be Noise Cleaned. Do you already know how to do that? If not, message me and I'll describe how it's done. (Are you using Audacity to record?)

Hi, Layabanoor :)

Two things need to be edited for this file before LibriVox can use it:

PL NOTES:

1 - There needs to be 5 seconds of silence at the end and there is only about 1. Can you add silence there?
2 - After that, when you re-export the file, the bit rate needs to be changed to 128 (it is 56 right now). When the Export to mp3 window opens, at the bottom there is a "Format Options" box. In there, change the Quality line to 128. Then finish the export, and it should be fixed. :)

Thank you :)
