A History of the Great War (volume one) by John Buchan (1875 - 1940).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-history-of-the-great-war-volume-one-by-john-buchan/
( )
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/historyofgreatwa01buch
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

OK, your MW is ready for you, David! We will wait here a day or two to see if we can attract a DPL for this project, unless you have someone in mind already.

Thanks! I hope we can attract a DPL who is also conversant in French, since there are quite a number of French names in the text; as I am weak on that, and much needed to be rectified.

I don't know much about French names, but I would like to offer to PL because the subject interests me, if you'll have me. It's OK to reject my offer, or I can step down if a more French adept listener arrives. :D

I would check forvo.com for suggestions on name pronunciation. It probably doesn't have everything but it has a lot (also, if in dire need, one can become a member and post the names they want pronounced and soon enough another member records them).

I wast just recently wondering if there are any PD books about WWI as a whole, given our cut-off date is just 6 years from the cessation of hostilities. Turns out there are (or at least is :) ). Have fun with it /random post.

Hi Rapunzelina and Piotrek81,
I'm enthralled with the interests that this project has attracted. :) Rapunzelina, I think your enthusiasm and the willingness to research can compensate for your alleged "don't known much about French names" problem. Let us learn French together in this project! (Of course, we have to bear in mine the duty that we have to ensure the pronunciations to be reasonably accurate for our future listeners.) Piotrek81, this is just the first volume of a four volume work by John Buchan on WWI, and I am already quite overwhelmed with the amount of work that this single volume may involve. But I hope that this may trigger the interests of other potential readers to carry on with the work, so as to ultimately complete an entire history of WWI in Librivox in the not-too-distant future. BTW, will you also be interested in PLing for this project?

Rapunzelina now has access, thank you!

As far as the French names, if you need help, there is a thread in the Need Help forum where you can post to ask for some help. I have a long running series where I run into French names and short passages. I feel bad for butchering such a beautiful language, but I do the best I can and ask for help when I need it. So, I feel your pain!

Since we have everyone on board, we are off to Going Solo!

Section 2 is PL OK!

There is an extra underscore in the filename, but that's ok as it can be fixed easily at cataloguing.

Could you also update the Magic Window with the link and duration, whenever you post for PL? Thanks! :)
