Children's Short Works Vol. 036.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/childrens-short-works-vol-036-by-various/
Librivox's Children's Short Works Collection 036: a collection of 15 short works for children in the public domain read by a variety of Librivox members.
NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.

This collection is for any children's short work in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute up to four selections per volume, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain. Please post here if you are unsure about public domain status.
Please submit poetry to: LibriVox Short Poetry Collection

Where can I find short works for children?
Try http://www.gutenberg.org/
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/loccs/pz
or any other place you can find some - but they must be Public Domain - many children's things on the internet are not.

You may read a limit of 4 selections per volume.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.

After 15 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free version 2.1.1. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with earlier versions of Audacity is not recommended.

  • ID3 Tags:ID tags are no longer needed - they are now produced automatically.

  • Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kbps using the following filename:
    • File Name: Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles i.e. the, a, an, and NO SPACES): csw036_shorttitleinoneword_readersinitials_128kb.mp3,
      e.g. csw036_scarletgiantbean_ge_128kb.mp3
3. SUBMIT your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy to post in this thread):
Uploader: http://librivox.org/login/uploader
Image

If you have trouble reading the image above, please send a private message to any admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: m8b1.
*If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

4. POST the following information in this thread:
  • • The link you copied from the uploader to your file
    • Name of your story
    • Author (birth year - death year)
    • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
    • Source from which you read (i.e. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.

Want to see if what you plan to record has been done already?
http://librivox.org/newcatalog/search.php?
Search by keywords in the Catalog Search
But don't let this stop you from recording your own version!

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Good afternoon,

I guess I will start this off with a fun one from a very well known author.

https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/csw036_enchanted_wc_128kb.mp3

The Enchanted Types

by Frank L. Baum (1856-1919)

Hello,

Here is my contribution:
Author: Anonymous
Title: Domestic Animals
URL to text: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/62315/62315-h/62315-h.htm
Audio recording: https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/csw036_domesticanimals_cjph_128kb.mp3
Time: 04:45

Am I right in thinking that because the publication date is before the 1950s that the author is presumed to have died before the 1940s, meaning that copyright status would be okay from where I am recording (+70 years)?

Kind regards,
Chad

Hello,
Here is another contribution:
Author: Unknown
Title: The Story Of The Three Little Pigs
URL to text: www.gutenberg.org/files/18155/18155-h/18155-h.htm
Audio recording ready for PL'ing: https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/csw036_thestoryofthethreelittlepigs_cjph_128kb.mp3
Time: 05:10

I am going to assumed that it would be okay to record this piece because the illustrator (L. Leslie Brooke) died in 1940, so the author is likely to have died around the same time, do you agree?

Kind regards,
Chad

The book was published in 1848. It is more than likely the author died more than 70 years ago.

Chad, you have previously recorded this exact same story for Volume 30. Are you sure you want to submit it to this collection as well?

Go for it, this story might get overlooked in Volume 30. Besides, it's quite a popular children's story :D

Alright, it is PL OK! But please in the future try not to repeat stories. I would prefer not to have the same story read by the same person. :-)

Hi:

This is my first time with a Children's Collection.

The Witch Tells Fortunes
By Alice Hale Burnett
Read by Dale Grothmann
Time 6:58

Audio at-
https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/csw036_witchtellsfortunes_dg_128kb.mp3

Text at:

(Or, if you are looking for an alternate source -- https://www.readingvine.com/passages/the-witch-tells-fortunes)

I just thought this was a good little morality tale, so I read it without knowing where to place it.
Thanks

Hi Dale,

Unfortunately I won't be able to accept this file. Short works are only for stand alone stories ~ they can't be random chapters out of a book. I did ask for second opinions on if this could work on its own, and the agreement was no.

I'm sorry!

There are a few PL notes:

There is a repeat at 1:18 - from the...from the cold
@ 2:37 there is a stumble/repeat: were st...stopped up with straw and rags.
and @4:06 a stumble: to be...behold was

If you could fix those and reupload, that would be great!
