24:22 there is a lengthy empty space here. Please cut 1:00 second out here.
The end is longer than the 5 seconds of silent space asked for, please cut 3 1/2 seconds off.

I did notice quite a few areas with what sounds like you inhaling before beginning the sentence. It is okay in this section though please do attempt to lessen these in your future recordings. Do you listen to and look at your recording before you post it? It is good to proof it in that fashion and it feels wonderful to know that you did that as your final step in the recording.

I did notice a number of areas that sound as if you are taking a breath before beginning on a new sentence. I will not ask you to re-rerecord them though try to pay attention to your recording after you have recorded the section.

I know that it may seem like many edits for you to repair. It will get to be less as you record more & you learn as you move along.

Lucy, well read. It does seem though that it could use you using noise reduction again twice as the background sound shows it at 32.8.(lowering it to around 24.2 is best) That should help it along and hopefully get rid of the beginning smidge of sound @ 0.5. Please also cut 1/2 second from the end as it is beyond the acceptable 5 seconds. Thank you & when those items are accomplished and you repost this section I am certain it will be pl okay then, once verified that those items are taken care of.

OK, will do, thanks for the advice; I use noise reduction but didn't really know much about the settings for it.

I feel I need to be able to record at a higher level, maybe it's just a question of mic position, but too close to the mic and I get plosives. I've searched around trying to raise the level on the computer but without much success. As it is I end up having to amplify a lot, then use a lot of noise reduction to compensate, and I fear if I have to do too much it will end up distorting too much! The technical side is a bit challenging for me, I'm afraid! :?

Very impressed with the speed and quality of the PLing on this one

Lucy,
In Audacity,if you look to the top right, you will see a couple of sliders. The second one in has a microphone icon. That adjusts your input and the slider should be right of center (mine is actually way over to the right!)
As for noise cleaning... there is no rule on the acceptable level of background noise. It fails Checker if it is over about 40. I always aim for a number between 24 and 30 but there is a huge gray area between 30 and 40 and it comes down to whether the PLer can hear anything. An extra round of noise cleaning can certainly help (either the whole file or selected portions) but beware of over-processing, which can make your voice 'tinny' or distorted.
Hope that helps.

My mic input setting in Audacity is always as high as it will go, I've also gone into the advance settings within the computer itself but it seems to be limited how much I can change it. I always put the MP3 through the checker before uploading too, and don't do so till it's passed. I usually do at least a couple of turns of noise reduction for the whole file, then go through and apply it in specific places where it looks like there are blips or whatever, but obviously miss the odd bit! Anyway, should help knowing the numbers now, I'll get onto it tomorrow, and will bear it in mind for the next chapter.

I've enjoyed being involved with this book, I had a book of animal stories when I was a kid which had one about Bayard, I seem to remember.
