johnpederson wrote: May 23rd, 2020, 10:06 pm Hi there,

I just did a recording of "The Lady of the Fountain" from Stories from Le Morte d'Arthur and the Mabinogion, retold by Beatrice Clay (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/15551).

Here's the recording link: https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/mlaw002_ladyfountain_clay_jp_128kb.mp3 (11:57).

This is my first Librivox recording! My name is John Pederson.

If anything's amiss, just let me know – thanks!

Best regards,
John Pederson
Beautifully done, John! You and Aisling are naturals :)

The only edit you'll need to do is shorten that front silence so it falls between .5 and 1 second. Right now it's a little longer than 2.

Once that's clipped, re-export the mp3, and re-upload the file (then post here again with the new time duration)

Thanks for this superb addition!

Oh! P.S. Thanks so much for following all the directions for your first submission - Here's your Reader Page: John Pederson.
You'll see that it will list all the projects you're connected to, including in-progress and finished. It also has a link to the lists of all the sections that are assigned to you for reading or proofing.
Aw thank you! Sorry about that – I fixed it and reuploaded it here:

https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/mlaw002_ladyfountain_clay_jp_128kb.mp3 (11:55).

Can't wait to hear the rest of these stories :)

Best regards,

I recorded a brief story myth of Sir Geraint. I hope this is what you're looking for! :) Please let me know if there's anything I need to fix.

Thanks,
Aisling

What a beautiful reading, Aisling!

Everything is terrific, except that the decibels need to be brought up pretty significantly. LibriVox needs the volume to land between 86 and 92, and this is registering at 81.0.
And then it needs a little noise cleaning.

These are both easily managed in the recording software, so you definitely do not need to re-record your section.

Are you using Audacity? (this is what I am familiar with, and if you already know exactly what I'm going to explain below, I apologize for the unnecessary instructions)

If so, just open the file, click Control-A (to select the entire track), then in the drop-down menu for "Effects" open up "Amplify." Type 7 in that top box (ignore the bottom one), and hit Enter. It'll process for a few seconds, and then the whole track will be loud enough for our files. :)

Now, use your mouse to highlight a fair portion of the silent area, like the final 4 seconds of the file (don't catch your reading words in this sample portion). In the Effects drop-down menu, choose Noise Reduction, and click on "Get Noise Profile." The box will disappear. Now use Control-A to select the entire track again. Open Noise Reduction again, and type these numbers in the boxes: Noise Reduction 12, Sensitivity 6, Frequency smoothing 3. Click OK. It'll process for a few seconds, and you'll see the silent areas get smoother. And if you listen, a lot of the background noise is magically gone. :)

Noise Reduction is one of the best features of the software, but if you over-use it, it'll pull distortion into your recording that makes your voice all tinny, and even sounds like invading space monkeys that obscure the words. A 12 is a good solid adjustment that shouldn't make that happen. Sometimes I go a little higher on mine, usually I go a little lower. It all depends on what the recording is doing.

After doing those two processes, re-export the file to the mp3 again, and the re-upload this newer version and post here that it's ready to be checked.

Thank you so very much for this great contribution. :D

Thank you so much! Here's the corrected file. :)

John, your section is now PL OK

Thanks!

I know how you feel - I always enjoy putting a group audiobook that I read a chapter(s) for onto my play list! And even when I've done the prooflistening for a project, I still get antsy to be able to play it as a whole. You always get the chapters in a jumbled order, unless it was a solo project. :)

Hi, NinaSteph :)

It would be great to have you do a recording for one of the sections here. Before you do that, though, you should do the 1-Minute Test (which isn't really a test at all, just a process to make sure your system is set up properly before you go through all the work of doing a full section somewhere).

You would have received a welcome email, and that should have a link in it to get to the test instructions. If you can't find it, send me a message and I'll help get you there. :) I remember fumbling around quite a bit when I first started.

In the meantime, I'll reserve a section for you for a couple of weeks.
Thanks @LCaulkins - I use Adobe Audition and all good to go in terms of my set up and quality :) if you want to send over the section you reserved for me i could do another 2 minute reading and send it over to you just so you can give a thumbs up or suggest if any adjustments are needed! Look forward to hearing from you x

Hi, Nina! I am slower than normal with my responses right now (noted in my signature line) - sorry if you've been waiting eagerly!

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "another recording" - I can't see any recording from you yet, nor any posts in the Listener's & Editors Wanted board for a first recording? If you have uploaded a recording, nobody will know it is there unless you've posted the link for the recording in the proper discussion.

Did you get the welcome email from LibriVox that I referred to before? Let's get these things straightened out for you so we can get you going. :)

(Also, this project is a little different from the majority of LibriVox projects, in that I do not assign specific stories for each section. The reader gets to choose what they want to record, that is in the subject matter of the audiobook, and is Public Domain. The first post with the Magic Window has a link to a document that lists various sources folks have been choosing from, and you can use other sources, as well, if they are Public Domain.) So, I have a section reserved for you, but you get to select what you record rather than me telling you what to read. :)

Thank you for bringing this source into the mix, Daniel! (and my apologies for taking so long to proof your section; our daughter and fiance are visiting)

Absolutely! You found a fantastic source!

But let's make yours Section 7, and bump the incomplete reservations down, for continuity.

Hi, inspri! Thank you so much for the submission. It'll get PL'd by tomorrow morning at the latest. :)

Hey, I went to add you, and found that you do have a Catalog page: InsPri

It will list all the projects that you're working on, both finished and in-progress. It also has a link to tables that show all the sections that are assigned to you for either reading or proofing. Pretty handy!

Hi, Inspri!

Please forgive me for the extra time - I ended up taking yesterday off from LibriVox, as the day was AMAZINGLY beautiful, and my husband and I spent it outdoors to enjoy it while it lasted. Which turned out to be a great thing, as this morning there is an ugly haze and the smell of distant wildfire in the air. :(

Your recording is terrific! I had never known this tale, so I enjoyed hearing it very much.

That was your first one? You're a natural - glad to have you here at LibriVox! The specs are all correct, your pacing is perfect, diction is clear, and volume is inside the LibriVox requirements. (It is a little on the lower end of the decibel range, so if you ever feel like it, you can increase the recording volume a small amount.)

I found no repeats or stumbles needing attention. The end silence is good. The front silence is a little bit too long - it is supposed to be between .5 and 1 second, but it is 1.5 seconds.

Could you reopen your recording, zoom in on the track so you can see the .5 second spacing bars, and then clip out .5 second from the front. When I do this on my tracks, I choose a part of the line that has a blip or tick in it, so whatever that little click in sound was, it gets erased - but don't cut out part of an actual word. :D (Let me know if you don't know yet how to clip out part of a recording.)

After you do this edit, re-export the file to mp3 again (you can simply overwrite your first mp3), then upload that new version the exact same way you uploaded the first time, and post here that link and the new length of time.

Thank you very much for this contribution!
