Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand by Henry Cadwallader Adams (1817 - 1899).

This was an abandoned solo, reactivated as a group project
“It is not good for man to be alone.” A young man travels to South Africa to find his Mother and sister. He wants to be a clergyman and a farmer when he arrives there, but fate has other adventures in mind. This story includes accounts of the Zulu-Boer wars. ( Ingrid Kennedy)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/38175
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin ===========================================

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand, by H.C. Adams. [Chapter]"

    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand, by H.C. Adams"

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename perils_##_adams_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. perils_01_adams_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: lt - Lynnet
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Hi Ingrid,
I set this up for you. There are 24 chapters. I will send you a private message about the Magic Window. How would you like your name to appear in the catalog, as Ingrid Kennedy?
Thanks,
Amy

Hi Ingrid,
You will be in Going Solo. You don't have to wait for a proof listener. One will come along or I can listen to some. I hope you enjoy it!

I found this file in the tests folder, not sure if this is relevant here since it was already uploaded in February?

Thanks, Ava. I have a copy in my folder, too. It never made it into the MW. I'll PM Ingrid.

Sounds like this is going to be a great story!

I PLed section 1.

Please add a little silence to the beginning. Between .5 and 1 second will be perfect.

Intro doesn't match the initial post. Some of the text is missing:

"Chapter [number] of Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Say:
"Perils in the Transvaal and Zululand, by H.C. Adams. [Chapter]"

Ending doesn't match the initial post. Please add End of Chapter 1.

Please add ending silence. We need ~5 seconds or your recording may get cut off during playback.

Volume is too low at 85.8dB. We aim for 89dB but have an acceptable range of 86-92dB.

File name does not match our requirements. When you upload the revision please rename as perils_01_adams_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case)
DPL list Mama is in the hospital. Please be patient. I’ll be online when I can. It should only be a couple of days.

Hi Linny,
Thank you for proof listening this section. Ingrid is gone so I will list this as abandoned. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi and welcome to Librivox!
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.
You will also need to be added to the catalog of readers. I will add you using your forum name, but if you prefer your real name or a pseudonym let me know. We can also link to a personal blog or website. Be sure to read the first post - all the info you need is there, but if anything doesn't make sense, just ask. The wiki (see the top of the page) has bundles of info too.

We don't tell you what you should read, so it is our practice to claim a specific section rather than "a section". That said, I will assign you the last chapter as it is short (good for getting your feet wet)... if that doesn't suit you, just let me know. I can easily change it.
Lynne

Hi Lynne, thanks so much, I'll get on with the 1-minute recording. Also, I've just looked at the last chapter and I make it be 4500 words rather than 490, I'm still happy to do it but I just wanted to let you know.
