Matt -
You must have exported the chapter again, as the checker program says the audio level is nearly 2 dB louder than your first upload (and right in the middle of the OK range). I listened again to make sure everything was fine - it is.

Chapter 1 is now marked PL OK.

Onward!

Just checking in to confirm that I can change filenames directly on the server, for future reference ;)

Chapter 2 is PL OK - word-for-word perfect, in fact.

I never would have expected an airplane. That's one way, I guess, to get Tarzan into some new area of the jungle.

Thanks, Rich. I have a feeling that this book will have lots of fun surprises. 🙂

Chapter 3 is up (25:26) and ready for PL.

I made the mistake of trying out a homemade pop filter, without doing any test recordings to see if it was effective... Turned the editing process into tedium trying to find and correct all the plosives and peaks. Please let me know if anything affects the quality of listening.

Chapter 3 is PL OK. I'm enjoying this tremendously, thanks for picking it and reading it.

Yes, I heard a few plosives in there, for example the end of 'head' at 1:49 and the p in 'approached' at 12:38. Neither of these is serious enough to cause concern.

At 16:28 I heard 'pushing' instead of 'pushed', but it doesn't change the sense of the story or understanding of the plot, so no worries on that matter.

Notes:
1) Your chapters all have some very low frequency stuff - down near 10 Hz, below the range of human hearing. (The Alali, with their huge sensitive ears, might hear these frequencies if only they could find speakers or headphones that could produce such low notes.) I always habitually run my recordings through a gentle highpass filter to reduce this kind of subsonic stuff - not that I've ever noticed it doing anything audible, but it does make the silences look a little cleaner in my Audacity window.
2) You must be using Checker or the ReplayGain function in Audacity to measure your chapter volume levels. Your 3 chapters so far have all been within 0.1 dB of each other when measured with Checker. Nice!
3) This chapter where we learn what Burroughs thinks would happen if women got a little power. It's typical of the times when it was written, I guess. Ugh.

Chapter 4 (21:08) is here:
https://librivox.org/uploads/dii/tarzanandtheantmen_04_burroughs_128kb.mp3

I ran a high-pass filter with the cutoff at 20 Hz. If you think it has improved the quality, I can run it on the previous chapters as well to clean them up.

I do use ReplayGain - it's like having a magic button to get the volume just right.

Now we get to season the sexist tone with just a pinch of light racism. :-)

At around 9:14 do you say 'un-pricked ears' or 'up-pricked ears'? That's an important enough difference it might be worth a fix. I'll mark the chapter Check PL Notes and let you decide.

The high pass filter makes a small difference - not enough to warrant re-uploading the previous chapters, but enough (imho) to make it worth doing for the rest of the book.

The sexism in Tarzan is a bit more on point than in Burroughs' Barsoom books - the various races in those are all just Martians and Not Quite Human. (But in those books John Carter does pick a pink female to be his bride.) We live in different and, I hope, more enlightened times.

I fixed the line in question and re-uploaded, if you don't mind giving it a spot check.

Just finished my pre-read for chapter 5... the ant men cometh! :D

Thanks!
At 24:26 I hear "the youth commander" - the text reads "the young commander"

At 25:00 I hear "moving about the hillocks" - the text reads "moving about among the hillocks"

Neither of these change the meaning or understanding of the story so I don't think there is any need to change them. Chapter 5 is PL OK. Nicely done.

(I'm a bit disappointed the ant men aren't each carrying a load 25 times his own weight. Future chapters will likely reveal if the ant men have some sort of telepathic link with each other - and maybe their tiny steads - that lets them coordinate so well. I won't read ahead, though; I'll wait for you to read it to me.)

And so, the names begin. You'll see what I mean.
