As writer, editor, journalist, I spend a good amount of time on a computer. I discovered librivox because, you can give your eyes some rest, close them and just listen ... :) In choosing what to record first, I have looked through a number of Forum pages and a few of Phil Chenevert's + Adrian Stephen's instructional videos.

It's great fun to join you all :) Cheers. I'll make my selection soon.

Welcome. This is Phil himself greeting you with a big smile. As an editor and writer you should feel right at home here. Ask lots of questions! Oh, and Isabella, the happy Librivox penguin (who is currently working from home of course) welcomes you too with her happy dance Image

Yup. Questions. I figured out how to install Audacity and used it for my first recording.

My question, Phil, is : (1) after recording do I use 'Noise Reduction' or 'Normalise' or both?

(2) at one point, Audacity popped up a dialog asking me to put in some numbers. Bitrate and stuff like that. If that comes up again at my next recording I'll check with you.

Thanks

Oh good, questions! 1) for your test recording you do not need either; the test is just to check out your tech settings (see #2)
2) One of the tech setting we need is for your recording software to be set to 128 kbs so you should choose that. Here is a video on doing that but you probably know this already https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8JkCgKo3fU&t=72s It does answer the bitrate question. :D

EDIT: later r ecordings will probably require some noise reduction. We don't recommend any normalization, it kicks the volume too highnormally.

Oops ! I did both noise reduction and normalising.

Thanks for the answers. I'll keep them in mind. Still learning ...

Ciao :)
