Kangaroo by D. H. Lawrence (1885 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/kangaroo-by-d-h-lawrence/
"Kangaroo" is the nickname of a character in this novel, Benjamin Cooley who was a charismatic leader in the fascist movement of ex-soldiers who fought in the Australian army in WWII.

The story's main character is an international journalist, Richard Lovat Somers who, with his wife, comes to rent a house next door to Jack Calcott and his wife who are natural-born Australians through-and-through. Jack is in league with Kangaroo and tries to persuade Lovat to join their political movement conflicting with the Socialist political faction in the country.

Throughout this book, there is an undercurrent of vaguely defined "Generalized Love" which borders closely on homosexuality between the otherwise testosterone-saturated Australian men.

Action-wise: There are riots and gunfights; but there are also moments of great tenderness of the men for their wives. Both Jack and Lovat dearly want to become "leaders of men", but Lovat backs away when he is recruited to join in an espionage campaign against the Socialists. Another undercurrent which muddies the waters for Lovat is that he is a true British citizen and thus resented by the Australians. (Summary by williamjones)
The DPL for this project is WilliamJones.
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs."

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/59848
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Is it okay for me to go ahead and sign up for sections before the Magic Window is up? I'd like to read chapters 8 and 13. I'm a new volunteer, so I'd like to use the pseudonym Scarbo in the LV catalog.
For the time being, I'll need a little more time than usual to PL sections that come in on weekdays. Thanks for your patience.

No, don't sign up now, for I have to divide the chapters into increments under an hour at least, and preferably shorter. I will tell our MC to move us to Readers Wanted when we're all set up. Stay tuned!

Thanks. This is a big book and will take awhile to get set up. I can divide chapters and add sections, and get well organized in due time.

Michele, if you'd like, I can go ahead and enter the raw data into the MW
based on the spreadsheet I sent you privately today.

All I'll need is a template of what I should enter.

I made some adjustments to the template and have started filling in the MW based on that. Will try to complete tomorrow. Mr. Sandman is wrestling me down now.

Ok, I think the MW is set up and we are almost open for business. Bill, I don't see any proper nouns (characters nor places), with pronunciation issues we should specify, do you? If not, claim your sections then let's get this moved over to Readers Wanted. :D

Whew, big book! I hadn't realized it was so long. It could take 'til the end of the year to complete. Patience will be required, and I must insist on longevity for all involved parties.

Buck up, Lassie! Stout hearted (wo)men will carry the day.
No, don't see problematic pronunciations at this point.

Please, I would like to be assigned sections 22 & 23 (Willie Struthers and Kangaroo)
This is just to get my toe wet in the project. There's a lot of meat here!

Hi, Scarbo, I've had a chance to listen to your 1 minute test, but don't see an Introduce Yourself post where I could ascertain your level of recording experience. We don't generally encourage newbies to recording to take long sections until they get used to the process of laying down track, editing, uploading, repairing, etc. Chapter 13, Revenge, isn't too long, about 20 minutes of completed recording compared to about an hour for Chapter 8 , so I'll just reserve 13 for you. Meanwhile, I recommend you first go pick up some short pieces, say the weekly or fortnightly poetry projects, or children's books which often have short sections under 1500 words. All great for practice before you jump into trying to complete longer sections. I'll put you in our catalog as Scarbo, you have 2 months to complete anything you sign up for so no hurry, and welcome to Librivox.
