The Life of a Fossil Hunter by Charles Sternberg (1850 - 1943).

This project is now complete! All files can be downloaded from the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/life-of-a-fossil-hunter-by-charles-sternberg/

Charles Sternberg was an American fossil collector and paleontologist. He was active in both fields from 1876 to 1928, and collected fossils for private collectors as well as for international museums. This book is part travelogue, part paleontology, and part historical narrative of life on the open prairie. In it, Sternberg tells of his early interest in fossil hunting as a boy, and scientific expeditions from his first in 1876 to one for the Munich Museum in 1901. ( Ava)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/57178
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please omit figure captions. You can omit references to figures if leaving them out does not change the sentence. Otherwise, please read them.
If you have questions - please ask.

  8. AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?

Hi there and welcome back! :D

It's been a while  so maybe it's best if you do a quick One-Minute Test before you begin recording again? Just post it over in "Listeners and Editors Wanted", wait for your [OK] and then you come back to me?

While you're waiting for that coveted [OK], you can think about a catalog name too (since I don't see any recordings of yours?) If you're planning on saying your name in the intro/outro of your recordings, this would be a good choice so that your fans can find you in the catalog.

Just let me know!
Cheers, Ava.

You have 74 minutes per section max. :D
Should not be a problem as such, but still, anything over 45 minutes starts to drag for me at least.

Welcome to this project! I see you've already passed you test - well done!

I've entered your claim into the MW and you have 2 months time for recording it.
On top of that, I'd still need your catalog name so that your fans can find you. It's best to choose the name that you say in the recording intro/outro, but anything goes, really...

Have fun on here!
Cheers, Ava.

Hello Ava,

Can I have your instruction on how to handle the references to graphics. I have in section 1:

"often standing on softer rocks that had been weathered away into columns, the whole giving the effect of giant mushrooms, as seen in the cuts (Figs. 1–3)." as the (wood-)cuts are not spoken, the reference makes no sense. Propose to omit ", as seen in the cuts (...)"

likewise:
"I trimmed off the rough stone from the margin of the nodules, as illustrated in the woodcuts by Christian Weber of New York (Fig. 5, c, d, e, and f), a labor of love on his part, for which I am deeply grateful."
I propose to delete everything after "nodules".

and
"The illustrations (Fig. 5, a and b) show the nodules before they are opened, and the open specimens before they have been trimmed, as in the other cuts."
I propose to omit the sentence.

After "everything else is dead to me." is a letter reproduced as a handwriting graphic. I tried reading the letter, but can decipher only 95% of it.
The text states: "The letter here reproduced has been as a lodestar to lead me on past all discouragements in the path which as a boy of seventeen I set out to follow. May it shed light upon the life of some other straggler!"
I would propose to omit this text.

Do you agree?

Best Regards,
Adrian

Oh, I forgot that this is science... I should have made this clear from the beginning.

We do not omit whole sentences but read the text as written, even here.

You can omit references to figures where leaving them out does not change the sentence as in your second example. In the first and third example, since it is an integral part of the sentence, please read them.

You can omit the letter and treat it as a figure (like the others), so you don't have to read it. However, please leave the text where it is referenced intact.

Hope this makes everything unclear. I'll add an explanation to the top post in a moment.
Cheers, Ava.
