LibriVox Short Poetry Collection 204

This project is complete and all audio files can be found in the catalogue: https://librivox.org/short-poetry-collection-204/

This is an open collection of poems for the month of May 2020. When this month is over, another one will be started. Don't despair if the sections are all filled up! I will add more sections as needed. :)
  1. How to record a poem - Initial Guidelines:
    • All poems read must be in the public domain (that is, not copyrighted).
    • You do not have to "sign-up" to submit a poem; as long as it's clearly in the public domain, just start recording!
    • There is a limit of 3 poems per person per collection.
    • Poems can be as short as you like, but not longer than 74 minutes (so as to fit in an audio CD)
    • To see what's been recorded already, you can search the LibriVox Catalog - but remember that we welcome multiple versions! :)
  2. Find a public domain poem:
The Poets' Corner is a great resource for public domain poetry. Other sources to try are Bartleby and Project Gutenberg.
    • You may use other websites if you like, but they need to state date of publication (or book edition) to verify public domain status.
    • Please read from the text you post! You may not read from another source, as the other source may not be public domain!
    • See this page for more info on copyrights. You can always ask me in this thread if you're not sure whether a poem is public domain.
  3. BEFORE recording:
    • If you are new to LibriVox, please check the Recording Notes thread first.
    • If this is your first time recording, you'll find this useful as well: The Newbie Guide to Recording.
    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz (44100 Hz)
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
  4. DURING recording:
    • At the beginning of the recording, leave no more than one second of silence and read the abbreviated "LibriVox disclaimer":
"[Poem title], by [author], read for LibriVox dot org by [your name]" or some variation on that, adding (if you wish) date, location, your personal URL, etc.
    • Then read the poem.
    • At the end, say: "End of poem. This recording is in the public domain." and leave five seconds of silence.
    • No recordings can be accepted without the LibriVox disclaimer.
  5. AFTER recording:
ID3 tags: Not needed for this project. (You may put "Recorded by [your name]" in the comments section if you wish)

    Save file as:
spc204_[poem's title in short form - no leading articles]_[your initials]_128kb.mp3
Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles - the, a, an, without the square brackets, please, and NO SPACES):
    e.g. spc204_roadnottaken_apc_128kb.mp3

When submitting, please post in the thread, following this template:
[Title of Poem] by [Author] (BIRTH-DEATH)
    Text URL:
    Duration:
    MP3 URL:
  6. Upload your completed recording:
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
    http://librivox.org/login/uploader
    Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: Rapunzelina
When your upload is complete, you will receive a link. Please click "Post Reply" at the top left of this thread, and post the link there.
    Also post the following information:
    • The title and author of the poem.
    • A link to the poem's text online (Poets' Corner, Bartleby, Gutenberg, etc.) so it can be verified as public domain. Please READ FROM the text you post!
    • The length of your recording in minutes & seconds.
    • If this is your first recording for LibriVox, please give us your name as you'd like it to appear in the catalog (that is, either your real name or some pseudonym). Also let us know if you have a personal URL you'd like to list (e.g. a personal blog).
PL Type: Special - Standard PL, plus checking all tech specs including ID tags, file names, volume, background noise, and plosives for new readers. For everyone, follow along with text and check to make sure any deviations from text don't affect rhyme, meter, or meaning.

Hello Rapunzelina:

Here's my recording of William Wordsworth's 'We Are Seven'.

And here're the details you need:
'We Are Seven' by William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 – 23 April 1850)
Text URL: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/9622/9622-h/9622-h.htm#poem10
Duration: 2:59
MP3 URL: https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/spc204_weareseven_gd_128kb.mp3

This is the first recording I've put together for Librivox. And though I may not show it, I'm nervously excited as hell!

Do list me as 'Garfield Francisco Dsouza' in the catalog. I do have a blog but I've yet to decide whether I should let that sail into the catalog entry. And that being said, well, here's hoping all's well! :D

Always,
Garfield

Thank you, Rapunzelina! :-)

I'm glad 'We are Seven' passed muster! I fell in love with that poem the moment I read it. Wordsworth is a charmer, really!

Here's another - this time by Sarojini Naidu. It's called 'My Dead Dream'.

And here're the details you need:
'My Dead Dream' by Sarojini Naidu (13 February 1879 – 2 March 1949)

Duration: 1:07

I hope this one turns out well - as well! :-D

Thank you, Kelly! Another step further in recording Anna Cora Mowatt's works

Thank you, Eva! Always a treat! :9:

Thank you, Gurjas! In this recording the volume is very very low. Could you amplify it and re-send? If you're using Audacity, a nice visual hint is when the waveform peaks above the 0.5 mark:
Image
So for future recordings, always check when you are recording that the waveform is adequate. If it's too small, bring up the input volume of your microphone, if it's too big, bring it down a bit  And if needed you can use the "Amplify" effect in Audacity for some final touches.

Hello! This is my first post to librivox. I hope I got the details correct. Please let me know if I was off on anything here. I read Shelley's "Ozymandias". If possible please add my name as "Daniel Davison" as the reader.

Hello Daniel! Welcome to Librivox and the Poetry Collection!

I find two technical issues with the recording: one is the bitrate, which I don't get at constant 128 kbps as it should be, and the other is the volume which is just a tad on the loud side, and causes clipping in your recording. Have you managed to use Audacity? It should be that when exporting in Audacity, you can choose the mp3 settings to be "Bit Rate Mode: Constant", "Quality: 128 kbps"
About the volume and clipping, there is an option in Audacity, menu View -> "Show Clipping". This would show where clipping occurs in red. To avoid clipping in future recordings, you can bring the input volume of the microphone down just a little to avoid clipping, so that the waveform peaks just above the 0.5 mark, and not all the way up/down. For this recording, we can de-amplify the volume a bit, but we can't fix any distortion caused by the clipping (fortunately it is OK, the distortion is minimal.)

The reading itself is great, full of expression! I hope you enjoy it and stick around! Your voice will be a valuable addition to the Librivox catalogue!

Rapunzelina -

Thank you so much for the technical coaching. That was much appreciated. It's the first time I've ever used Audacity, so I'm still learning the program. I turned down the mic volume and I think I managed to export it in the correct format this time. However, I did a different poem (also relatively short). It's Tennyson's "The Kraken". If I redo the prior one ("Ozymandias") and upload it to the share drive, is there going to be a problem when the file name is the same as the other one I uploaded?

Any advice on this recording, including whether it can be used in the current collection, would be most welcome. Thank you so much!
