The Magnet and The Churn by W. S. Gilbert (1836 - 1911).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-magnet-and-the-churn-by-w-s-gilbert/
A bit of frivolity in these trying times. This Weekly Poem is taken from Bab Ballads and Savoy Songs by W. S. Gilbert. ( David Lawrence)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This week's poem can be found here.

Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording. If this is your first recording, you'll also find this Newbie Guide to Recording useful.
Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
The Magnet and The Churn by W. S. Gilbert, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal URL.]
Then read the poem:
A magnet hung in a hardware shop,
And all around was a loving crop
Of scissors and needles, nails and knives,
Offering love for all their lives;
But for iron the magnet felt no whim,
Though he charmed iron, it charmed not him,
From needles and nails and knives he'd turn,
For he'd set his love on a Silver Churn!
His most æsthetic,
Very magnetic
Fancy took this turn—
"If I can wheedle
A knife or needle,
Why not a Silver Churn?"

And Iron and Steel expressed surprise,
The needles opened their well drilled eyes,
The pen-knives felt "shut up," no doubt,
The scissors declared themselves "cut out."
The kettles they boiled with rage, 'tis said,
While every nail went off its head,
And hither and thither began to roam,
Till a hammer came up—and drove it home,
While this magnetic
Peripatetic
Lover he lived to learn,
By no endeavor,
Can Magnet ever
Attract a Silver Churn!

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.
Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: magnetchurn_gilbert_your initials in lowercase_128kb.mp3
(e.g. magnetchurn_gilbert_klh_128kb.mp3 )

*Readers, please check back in a day or so for any feedback regarding your reading.

*Best to copy the filename provided in the opening post into the LV Uploader, inserting your initials of course.

I completed the weekly poem, it is my first ever attempt at a recorded reading (other than the 1 minute test), so this is a big moment for me.

Welcome to Librivox Tomas, good first reading. :D

Just a couple of comments,
- at 1:15 you've read "Lover lived to learn," the text reads "Lover he lived to learn," (we strive for word perfect in these poetry readings) we can edit your file if you wish.
- the initials in the filename should be lowercase.
- the volume is just a bit low at 86.6 dB, you should aim for your waveforms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:
Image

You can check your volume using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK)

Welcome to LibriVox Emily :D good first reading.
Just one item to fix, the volume is low at 84.3 dB, you should aim for your waveforms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

You can check your volume using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker You will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK)
