The Marie Antoinette Romances, Vol 1: Balsamo, The Magician by Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870). Translated by Henry L. Williams (1842 - )

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-marie-antoinette-romances-vol-1-balsamo-the-magician-by-alexandre-dumas/

This is the first volume of Dumas' Marie Antoinette Romances (also called "The Memoirs of a Physician"). This historical fiction chronicles the strange events surrounding the fall of the French monarchy (starting ~1770) and rise of revolutionaries so terrifying that the period is still called "The Reign of Terrors" (1793-1794). In this volume, a renowned magician, Count Alessandro di Cagliostro (Balsamo), employs various occult tactics, like hypnotism and necromancy, to gain state secrets. Balsamo claims to be plotting against the Bourbons, but one must wonder whether this 3000 year old sorcerer has an ulterior motive... (jvanstan)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks Patty Marie! I've added a few more sections :) As far as the pandemic, we're doing ok. My wife is a nurse who is part of the 'critical staff,' so she has to go to work. My university has gone all online, but its crazy finding time to do online teaching while watching two kids full time (because school's closed)... Phew! I'll just "keep calm and [make time to] librivox" ;)

Hope all is well with you and yours,
John

Prayers that your wife is well protected if her hospital has any patients with covid-19. My sister Tory is a nurse in Washington state where I think there are more cases than in Georgia, if there are any in Georgia.

Thanks for the well wishes, Patty Marie! I've got a few more sections ready :)

Yeah, my wife does have to work with covid-19 patients and some Georgia cities have experienced such a large surge in cases (Atlanta and Albany, for example), that they must fly the patients to the next biggest hospital (here in Savannah). But, she's staying as safe as possible, and so things are odd these days, but fine so far. :/

Of course, best wishes for the safety of your sister (and you)!

Hi Patty Marie - Hope all is well! I've added sections up to 36  I think I should have enough time next week to get to the remaining 10 sections :9:

This book is just ok so far, though. The whole sorcery thing sometimes comes off a little crutch-like.

All the best wishes,
John

Thanks for the well wishes, Patty Marie :) We're all doing well enough considering the circumstances. Still homeschooling the kids and online-schooling the college students! At least the online classes for my University end this week and I can focus more on daddy duties :9: (and librivoxing, lol).

All the remaining sections are ready! Woohoo! I'll start up the next volume in the meantime

Hope all is well,
John
