This should clear things up for everyone.... or not...

The Rules as of today:

1. Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.
2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.
3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.
4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.
5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.
6. Gloves won't help, but they can still help. But only if you don't trust them, and only if you remove them correctly.
7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.
8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.

It is indeed, because it's the only way to make this virus go away - as it has been proven time and time again.

You're only going to get herd immunity (that is, the chance that the disease will spread from an infected person is reduced to an acceptable level) when above a certain percentage of the population becomes immune. If I remember my microbiology courses correctly, that figure is around 85%. So we need either effective vaccination or natural infection for this proportion of the population. Given that we won't have a vaccine for over a year, we have to rely on the infection spreading.

I believe that the sole function of the lockdown (and widespread use of masks etc) is not to prevent the spread of infection, but to prevent it spreading so fast that some of the patients who need hospital treatment can't get it. At some point, someone will have to balance the capacity of the health system to handle the increased flow of sick patients against the damage to the economy and to the psychiatric, social and financial status of the individuals in it.

EDIT: ... and I've just heard that the WHO (and an immunology expert who was interviewed on the BBC) seem doubtful that previous infection with a coronavirus confers immunity, so we really do have a problem!
