Alexander the Great by Jean Racine (1639 - 1699). Translated by Robert Bruce Boswell (1864 - 1933)

Racine caused furour in the French theater community with his second play, Alexander the Great, when "The sensitive poet seems to have been disgusted by the manner in which it was being acted; for, a fortnight after it had been put on the boards at the Palais Royal [by Moliere], Moliere's company learned with astonishment and indignation that it was being simultaneously performed at a rival theatre."

"The story of this drama is derived from Quintus Curtius, Plutarch, and Justin." Racine followed the rules of classical French dramatists: one main plot, action takes place in one day and at one location.

Special for this play: If you have an overdue claim in another of my plays (see signature line) - whether or not an extension was granted - you can not claim here until you submit your stuff and have your files PL OK, or it is after 23 April. Trying to give new folks a chance here.

Well, Racine's Thebaid has gone quickly - just over a month and almost complete. Since you liked that, here's another. Supposedly true, which only means that Racine used classical sources that might or might not be true as the basis for the "historical action"

Gender neutral, of course. And watch your step on this play: the ever vigilant Kitty - who first suggested that I do Racine's plays and has proven correct yet again in predicting that ye'all would like them - will be our DPL.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/dramaticworksje01boswgoog/page/n85/mode/2up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

If no one else has claimed it, may I have a bloody go at Alexander? Looks like fun.

great job, Ethan, wow, you managed to capture the mind of this king quite well. Prudent in a way, yet dutiful and also in love. Calm, not hot-headed, this is how I pictured him too. thanks for tackling the role. Well done.

However, you missed a few spots:

> at about 2:27: (p. 71) missed lines: "Ah, my sister, how my heart beats an alarm, and tells me, as I look, that he is loved !"

> at 2:29: (p. 71) missed beginning of quote: "'Tis fit to hear him..."

thanks, looking forward to the next acts
