The Hobby-Horse by Arthur Wing Pinero (1855 - 1934).

A man's wife is caught up in Philanthropy, generously supporting all sorts of good causes. But that does not include her husband's interests in "the Turf or the Stable - no feeling except one of positive distaste." So what is he to do? How about somehow getting her to "endow a Home for about twenty decayed jockeys and stablemen ... who have outlived their chances on the turf and fallen on bad days?" Sounds very noble, but of course that is not quite what he has in mind....

  • This project is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/the-hobby-horse-by-arthur-wing-pinero/

And away we go again. We last saw horse racing ala Pinero with "Dandy Dick" - not one of my finer moments: I still have the bruises - but I'm going to play the clergy in charge yet again and see if I can improve my image. Unlikely, but I shall try.

Gender neutral, of course. Sadly there do not appear to be any speaking parts for horses in the script.

Kitty will play the mysteriously cunning philanthropist Mrs Spenser Jermyn, counting her millions while keeping an eagle eye on Mr Jermyn and the rest of ye'all as our stalwart DPL.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.210177/page/n15
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Sorry to hear there are no speaking parts for horses. Maybe I could narrate instead?

Yes, I know it is too soon. Feel free to slip your super-fast standard 1 hour turnaround on DPL'ing! But the pathos of Broken Hearts really needs some comedy to follow quickly on its heels.

Thanks, Todd

Thank you. Hewett is actually a groom, who takes care of horses and their riders.

Well Todd, you can put me down for Mr Spenser Jermyn, and maybe between us this time we’ll manage to tame down that little filly.

Cheers,
Chris

I don't know if even the two of us will be enough in this case - because Mrs Jermyn is more than she appears....

Todd, which parts of the introductory note would you like to be read? All of it? Or leave out the section in the middle that reproduces the programme of the first performance?

Thank you.

By the way, the files are not named correctly. In dramatic works we move the MW sections around - to keep open roles on top for easy visibility, to group completed roles by Acts so they can be edited together. So we don't use the section numbers (which change), but rather the Act numbers. I can deal with it now, but if there are any corrections required, please look at the file name example in the first posting on this project (different from the first posting on a book project).

Thanks, Todd
