A question and answer format catechism that was the standard catechetical text in Great Britain throughout most of the 20th century. Popularly called the Penny Catechism, as the original version only cost one penny. Various editions of the Penny Catechism were issued through the century and changes were made to the text, particularly following Vatican II. This edition is the pre-Vatican II edition. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard
IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated). Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!
The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording! START of recording (Intro):
"Section [number] of The Penny Catechism (Catechism of Christian Doctrine). This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Say: "The Penny Catechism (Catechism of Christian Doctrine), by Catholic Truth Society. [Chapter]"
For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
"Section [number] of The Penny Catechism (Catechism of Christian Doctrine) by Catholic Truth Society. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Only if applicable, say: "[Chapter title]"
END of recording:
At the end of the section, say: "End of Section [number]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of The Penny Catechism (Catechism of Christian Doctrine), by Catholic Truth Society. "
There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
Example filename pennycatechism_##_catholictruthsociety_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. pennycatechism_01_catholictruthsociety_128kb.mp3)
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
I’m a total newbie and want to record the Catechism of Christian Doctrine (England, 1921). I’ve got a new mic and will do a short test.
I’ll also do the template. No idea if I’m doing things in the right order/way; there’s a lot of detail to take in!
Cheers,
David
Please do the template, then edit the post you just made (the little pencil icon in the top right corner of your post) and paste in the template code that comes up after completing the template.
The test should really be done first, but since you've already posted in here, you can use the template to set up the first post of the project thread.

As one of your first steps, you might want to have your text identified as being in the public domain. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as knowing its publication date. (That's a good sign, of course, but things are a tiny bit more complicated than that.)

Thanks. The book is not listed in Gutenberg, but my facsimile copy shows 1921 as publication date, so it's fine.
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by this. Is there a reason why you are not linking to the e-text?
Yes, that's correct. When an MC comes along to set this up, you'll upload a scan or photo of the title page and copyright page, put 'em in a zip file, and upload them to your MC's folder.
(I'm full up on MC projects, so I won't be taking up this project.)
I've just submitted my 1 minute test in Listeners and Editors Wanted. A lot of crackle in the background when I played it back through laptop speakers.
I'm going to move this to Book Suggestions for now, to keep the Launch Pad tidy. When you get your new mic and are ready to go with a new test, post in this thread. We'll move it back to the Launch Pad for you.
P. S. In the meantime, you can decide how many sections this project will have. I assume you don't want each Q&A to be its own section/file. So you'll be grouping Q&As together. We'll need at least a rough estimate as to how many sections you'll have, to set up the Magic Window. It's up to you how many files you want, but they must be under 72 minutes to fit on audio CDs. I'd suggest sections of anywhere from 10-40 minutes. If you read at an average pace of 150 wpm, that would be about 1500-6000 words per section.
Moved back to the Launch Pad for you. Looks like the only problem on your test is volume. I'll set up this project after breakfast, but please wait to record anything until your test is OK'd.
Oh, and you can upload the images of the title page and copyright/printing date page in a zip file to my uploader folder. Uploading instructions are at the bottom of the first post in this thread.
As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.
Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists
Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest and/or change what I've put in.
When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.
