Marvels of Modern Science by Paul Severing.

This project is now complete. All recordings can be found on the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/marvels-of-modern-science-by-paul-severing/

The purpose of this little book is to give a general idea of a few of the great achievements of our time. For instance, the flying machine is engaging the attention of the old, the young and the middle-aged, and soon the whole world will be on the wing. Radium, "the revealer," is opening the door to possibilities almost beyond human conception. Wireless Telegraphy is crossing thousands of miles of space with invisible feet and making the nations of the earth as one. 'Tis the same with the other subjects,—one and all are of vital, human interest, and are extremely attractive on account of their importance in the civilization of today. Mighty, sublime, wonderful, as have been the achievements of past science, as yet we are but on the verge of the continents of discovery. Where is the wizard who can tell what lies in the womb of time? Just as our conceptions of many things have been revolutionized in the past, those which we hold to-day of the cosmic processes may have to be remodeled in the future. Science is ever on the march and what is new to-day will be old to-morrow. We cannot go back, we must go forward, and although we can never reach finality in aught, we can improve on the past to enrich the future. (From the Introduction)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/6139
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This looks like fun - "modern" science as of 1910, from the serious chapter on radium to the fun movies to a very philosophical question in the end.

DPL very welcome!

Hello Ava, I'm back! 8-)
I'd love to do sections 4 (movies) and 7 (plants)!
I love old movies!
And I love Luther Burbank! I grew up in Santa Rosa, where his house/museum is; and I live in Sebastopol, where his experimental farm is!
And... I like the way Severing writes; it's very fluid and "natural" sounding.
Thank you very much...LJB

Hi there and welcome to LV and to this project!

I see that you're brand new, and since I don't know if you've ever recorded anything, please do our test as the very first thing! Your welcome mail has all the infos and links you need; post the result over in "Listeners and Editors Wanted" please.

For now, I've pencilled you in for those two sections, please come back and claim "for real" when your test got an [OK].

Have fun on here! :D

As it says quite clearly in the instructions for the 1-Minute-Test, you will need to take the link you get from the uploader and post it over in "Listeners and Editors Wanted". If you don't do that, nobody knows that your test has arrived and thus nobody will be able to give you any kind of feedback.

Thanks. :D

Hello, I can read chapters 1 (Flying Machines) and 6 (Ocean Palaces) if they are still available. I got the OK on my 1 minute test yesterday, so this will be my first narration. I am very excited, but please let me know if there is anything I should be aware of.

Thanks,
nick

Hi Nick and welcome to LV and this project!

It's great that you passed your test with flying colors, congrats! I have signed you on for chapter 6 only - yesterday, Desenbigh has requested chapter 1, I want to give him a bit more time to get his test in. :D

What I have to know for starters is what name you'd like to have in the catalog. This can be your real name, your forum name... if you're planning on saying a name in your recordings this would be a good choice, so that your fans can find you.

Other than that, just one tip: Relax! You've already passed your first recording - the test.
Cheers, Ava.

Great, I'll just use my forum name, N Krant. I can also read chapter 10 (Electricity in the Household) if that is still waiting to be filled. Thank you for guiding me through through the first narration.
