The Beacon Second Reader by James Hiram Fassett (1869 - 1930).

In the "Beacon Second Reader" the author has chosen for his stories only those of recognized literary merit; and while it has been necessary to rearrange and sometimes rewrite them for the purpose of simplification, yet he has endeavored to retain the spirit which has served to endear these ancient tales to the children of all ages. The fairy story appeals particularly to children who are in the second school year. (From the Preface) ( James Fassett)
• This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-beacon-second-reader-by-james-hiram-fassett/
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/15659
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks very much. I'll update the MW with the chapter names later today.

I would appreciate getting your opinion on whether to include the last section of the reader, Phonetic Tables. It contains a series of word lists that illustrate patterns in word structure. It would be useful for someone reading along with the printed text (e.g. for a child or someone learning English as a second language) but for a regular listener without the text, it would be of no interest at all. I was thinking of including it, and adding a note on the title page explaining the purpose of the section and that the written text would be required to follow along.

It is your call. If you do, the note about it in the description of the book does sound like a good idea.
I will move you to Going Solo now.
Have a good night!

Thanks. I'll give some thought to the word list while working on the other chapters.

Concerning the metadata, if the story had a generic reference in the Table of Contents like folk tale, I checked to see if there was an author it was normally attributed to and used that instead (e.g. Cinderella - Charles Perrault). I assume that's okay.

Also, I came across two authors that I couldn't find in the drop-down list:
THE BABY - Hugh Miller
THE NEW MOON - Eliza Lee Follen
Let me know if you are able to add them and I'll update the metadata.

I expect to start recording in the next day or two so I'll have something uploaded soon.

I have started with chapter 2, a short poem, just to test things out. I'm a bit rusty at this.

I'm not sure of the correct procedure. I've added the url in the "listen url" field and the duration under "notes". Is that correct? Should I add those as soon as I upload the file the next time?

Thanks,
Evan

Yes it's probably easiest to do it when you upload. You can just say 0:51 rather than duration 0:51 but it doesn't make much difference.

Thanks. I had read the guide but I found it a bit confusing because it refers to adding the link provided by the reader. I read that to mean that someone else does it.

I apparently didn't do it properly for my last project (my first solo). I just sent a message with the information and those fields in the MW weren't ever updated. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't fired.

I've uploaded the Preface.

Thanks again for all your help.
